Location: Twin Cities MN | I answered a local ad from a guy who said he had a 3 speed OD trans with clutch, flywheel and bellhousing from a 56 DeSoto that he pulled from a DeSoto Hemi car he junked after coming back from Vietnam. It has been stored inside since and is nice and clean and looks like somebody painted it years ago. There was no OD solenoid or place for one and it seems in real good shape so I was not sure what it was since it has what appears to be a floor shift mount on tail housing, but for $100 I took it home. The input bearing retainer was damaged when removing from car so took part number on net c-94796 and search turned up 833 four speed parts.
Tail housing has cast numbers C95658-G, main case is C95639 U and it has 3 shift levers? Is this an early 833 or what? It is a real heavy brute, probably weighing about the same as The Ford T85 OD trannies I have, but this ain't no overdrive IDT.. |

After that, they all had normal yokes for a U-joint.

'65 833 had the flange also, the 727 auto was the only trans to get the slip yoke in '65. |

lose the old style yoke.

Location: Twin Cities MN | It must be 64-65 production then being it still has the flat flange as on older models, but does not have the ebrake setup on the tail like older models and looks like the tailmounted shifter would interfere with one ever having been mounted there. I looked on EBay and found 833's listed with both short and long tailhousings. One listing claims it is an OD transmission and another listing specifying that it is not the OD version. Which must mean they were produced in at least two different gear ratio combinations.
So, perhaps the one I picked up really is an OD trans as seller advertised, but in the same way the last of the Ford toploaders were - looked like typical 4 speed trannies, but third gear was 1:1 and 4th gear was the OD. So, some called them 3 speeds with OD and some called them 4 speeds... Can you tell what the gear ratios are without disassembly? I spose if I can get it in 4th gear and turn input shaft I should see a slightly overdriven tail when turning input shaft.
Are these particularly weak being apparently for early Darts and small 273 powered cars like that? It would almmost seem it has got to be stronger than 39-48 Ford trannies that people used to put behind the old hemi's. Thinking I might rather have this trans behind the 341 DeSoto than either a Torquflite or the seemingly more archaic 39-48 Ford 3 speed using adapter setup that came with a 330 DeSoto motor I got a couple years ago.

The relative strength of the non-OD 23-spline 833 is the same but the 273/6 trans had different ratios. (3.09-1 first gear)
The OD 833 can be identified externally by the position of the shift levers on the side cover, the OD has the front lever facing down and the rear lever facing up. |
