I'm sorting out some wiring on a 1957 Dodge Sierra and I currently have the car hot-wired and am using a push button starting switch under the hood.
I don't understand the start procedure. From what I understand you turn the key and press the neutral button, is that correct? If the car dies out with the neutral button pressed does it start to crank immediately? I know about the vacuum switch on the intake that I believe prevents it from engaging the starter if it's running but what I'm wondering is say you start the car cold and it dies out right away, does the starter engage right away if still in neutral?

I have a 1958 Dodge service manual for my other car which of course starts differently and I found a 1957 wiring schematic on line but I haven't found any info on the starting procedure.

Thanks

I think I can help with this one as well

The neutral switch (button) has to be pushed in past its normal rest position when its in neutral, so it wont automatically re start

The vacuum switch is there, so if your in gear and the car is running, you can push the neutral button without having to make sure you dont push it to far and kill the starter

I bet thats happened a lot when the vac switch has failed

Thanks, that makes sense.
My buttons are stiff from sitting so that's probably why I didn't feel a separate detent to engage the starter on the neutral button.

The manual-shift '57 had the starter in the ignition switch, I had so much trouble with the vacuum switch that I installed a stick-shift ignition switch and used an ISO relay to hook up to the trans-mounted NSS.
