Member Posts: 21 | I recently found a 59 Plymouth wagon in a wrecking yard, and I suspect it may have a power tailgate window. There is no wind up handle on the outside, and on the dash very close to the park brake handle there is a handle that resembles a small window crank on the bottom edge of the dashboard which I suspect may be the switch. Am I right to assume that it is indeed a power window? I can get the tailgate for $100. The tailgate is damaged somewhat but I'm not really interested in the tailgate, just the power assy. Did Dodge offer a power tailgate window in 57, as I may consider putting this in my wagon.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 444 Location: North of the 49th | Hi Sounds like its got the power window alright...Dodge did offer a power window in '57 and '58. I installed a power tailgate window in my '58. When you go after the setup take everything... the dash switch and handle along with the wiring to the tailgate as its a separate harness. Kind of a PITA to get out but worth it. If you're not taking the gate strip it out completely. Keep in mind that since you have a manual gate on your wagon the area where the exterior window crank fits will have to be modified for the power window key switch and support...the tailgate switch is actually down inside the gate behind the regulator and is operated by a rod coming down from the key switch.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 6506 Location: Newark, Texas (Fort Worth) | It does sound like its electric. I am looking for a tailgate carcass (and surrounding metal to mount it, any way...) with no window or guts. What would you want for it? Marc. My cut and paste for a 4 door to a two door pickup I am getting from big M. Edited by mstrug 2014-09-19 5:21 AM

Member Posts: 21 | Is there a way to get the power window mechanism to roll down so as to be able to remove the tailgate assy.? (of course I realize that a person may be able to connect power to it and roll it down, but if it doesn't work, or say if the new power assy is on your car and the window won't roll down, is there a emergency backup plan? I'm pretty sure to get the tailgate of the scrap wagon, I need to roll the window down to get access to the screws that hold the tailgate on.

Expert Posts: 3780 Location: NorCal | Every time I've removed the power tailgate guts in a wrecking yard I've just smashed the window glass. Hated to do it but there's no other way short of installing the battery and hoping the wiring is intact. FWIW, the dash-mounted switch is the same one used with a power convertible top.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 444 Location: North of the 49th | Hi No need to break the glass, what I've done is to get inside the car and remove the inner tailgate trim panel (it's not easy and some of the screws are a pain to get at) I remove the clips that hold the tailgate window regulator arm pins in the window glides , push the arm/pins out of the glides and pry the window down ward. On '57 and '58 there were two small removable panels in the Tailgate trim panel that allowed access to the retaining clips. This is a real peach of a job on a hot sunny day in a wrecking yard inside a car thats full of dirt/dust etc.

Veteran Posts: 178 Location: South central Idaho. | Quick bit of advise! Just go buy it right now if you have not already done so. It is money in the bank and 57-59 will interchange. Buy the way where did you say the tail gate was located?

Extreme Veteran Posts: 337 Location: UK | Just curious. Does anyone know of the actual tailgates interchange with 1960 dodge? I'm thinking not because of unibody but.....

Veteran Posts: 119 | Sometimes the glass and the channels for power windows are unique to the power window option. Don't be busting any glass. If you don't care about the tailgate, use a portable cutting wheel to fold open a new big access door on the outside.

Member Posts: 21 | For those that want an update, I haven't got the tailgate yet. If the weather co operates a bit, hopefully very soon (it's been a pretty consistent -20c) for about the last month with a minor warm up in there which then allowed me to get some of the other priority stuff accomplished. BTW the tailgate glass is already broken. I think what I'll do, is take the inner panel off, and try to jump the motor with a battery. Hope it rolls the frame down. Thanks everyone for the help.
