Hi All
Just took out the gas pedal mechanism out of my 57 Firesweep and was wondering if there was a rubber type water/dust seal for the arm? Got it blasted and am ready to paint it, also what color was the three bolt throttle linkage on the firewall as painted by the factory? Mine is engine silver now but may have been repainted by PO.
Thanks
Jerry

While you're at it, and incase you're looking for one, I obtained a new, repro steering column seal from Gary Goers - see page #3 of his catalogue - part one (pages 1-29) - it is part #450

BTW - you must send your old seal to Gary as he needs the metal "core" around which he molds the new seal.

(Gary Goers site addy: http://www.garygoers.com/products.html )

Here's a photo of my poor old, original steering column seals, and some photos of the new ones being fitted into place:

Jerry,
The gas pedal dust seal (I call it a boot) that was original was made from very thin soft rubber. The ones I bought from Gary Goers were too thick--stiff and, when installed, made the pedal way too hard to push. Also it wouldn't allow the return spring to retract the linkage like it should. I scrapped them and made my own out of thin latex.

The bell crank mount and all linkages were silver cadmium plated from the factory.

Greg, you are right. The shell was thin like paper. I assume you were right to build your own. This rubber boot in my 1956 Chrysler New Yorker needs to be replaced as well.

Happy Motoring!

Dieter

You can buy that Plastic-dip stuff in spray cans. I have used it as a spray to "redo" rubber parts that are cracked and split but that are still basically holding shape. Just spray several coats to build it up. The only issue I've seen is that it doesn't seem to be very resistant to sunlight so I would not use it on parts exposed to the sun.

You can make a gas pedal floor seal boot out of the thumb/palm section of a heavy rubber glove or a shift boot with a wide flange on one end and a nipple at the other end. The comment about Goers' replacements being too thick is exactly right, unfortunately. Some wheel cylinder and tie rod end dust covers are very thin and could be adapted to work.

I used the one from Gary, but they have to be modified. I sealed the vertical hole and cut one from the side for the linkage. Then filled the whole bulge with grease. Works perfect.

Hi Guys
Thanks for all the great info!!
I liked the rubber glove idea so I went and bought a pair to make my new seal, but I liked the gloves so much they have become my new sandblasting gloves So now I need to go buy another new pair, should have bought two pair to start with I guess! My steering column seal only has one crack in it so I might as well try the repair idea, should work good. Going to get a "clean-up cut" on the front drums today then more "scrape and clean grease" so I can paint the backing plates. The wife is gone for a couple days so I get to paint and bake my exhaust manifolds in the oven, work late and eat poorly!!!
