Veteran Posts: 149 Location: Iowa | I am having a problem with my 57 Belvedere. Its a 4dr sedan and the drivers side rear doo won't latch. The star just spins freely. So I take the door panel off, remove all the bolts on the latch system, disconnect the inside actuator link and... Now I can not get the lock bar to disengage! Erg. It looks like its just slips into the hole in the latch but no matter how I twist and push it I can't get it to disengage. I have searched the archives about door latches but no one has addressed this step. Thanks.

Hence, remove the door lock from the door first and then turn the actuator link 90 degrees.

Veteran Posts: 149 Location: Iowa | Wizard: Thanks for answering. You are correct that I need to turn the connection 90 degrees but my problem is that I can't get the parts turned 90 degrees because I keep hitting interior parts of the door. I can get it to about 80 degrees. Am I missing a trick to this? Thanks again

Veteran Posts: 149 Location: Iowa | d500: Thank you. I have tried to read all of them before I started this project. None that I recall specifically dealt with how to unlatch the locking connection. Please link any that you found useful. Hoodinki: Do I need to remove the window? None of the links I read made mention of this but maybe I missed it. Thanks for any suggestions

Just inbolt the handle end of the inside linkage as well as the latch and the outside handle, and wrestle the latch and linkage to a 90 degree position. A good rear latch should be easy to find. You can take the old latch apart by using a die grinder to un-swedge the two pins. Good luck finding the parts - easier to just get another latch.

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | A while ago, Darryl had PM'ed me an excellent description on how to overhaul a worn door latch. A photographic "how to" illustration on this project would be greatly appreciated, if anyone has a worn out latch which could be used as an illustrator for this project.
