Veteran Posts: 158 Location: Ottawa, ON | Hi, I've recently rebuilt my carburetor (as mentioned in the title a Carter AFB 3133S LO) that is sitting on top of my stock rebuilt 383 using the Hygrade 224D Kit which should be the right kit for this carb. I've also replaced both floats. Every think worked fine, and as soon as the engine is warm, it runs really strong and has a nice idle. But unfortunately as long as the engine is running on the choke it idles really bad and is also lacking power. I have adjusted the choke according to the manual and set the fast idle to 1800 rpm when warm, which gives about 500 rpm when cold. Judging by the color of the plugs and the dense black/grey exhaust smoke the engine is running really rich when cold. Does anybody of you have an idea what the problem cold be? Thanks in advance!

I thought it is pulled open by vacuum as soon as the thermostatic coil looses its tension? Edited by Polara61_383 2015-02-22 12:37 PM

With the engine cold and with a symptom such as what yours is presenting with, I would, with the engine running and the air cleaner in place pull the choke actuating rod downward gradually until the engine unloads, RPM picks up and cleans up leaving just enough choke to keep it happy cold. I would mark the rod and readjust the choke thermostatic coil to match my mark. Ensure that the link attaching the choke plate to the piston at the back of the air horn is in place...that is your "vacuum break" if that's not working it will add to the problem. For your reference I have included the original Carter specification sheet for your particular carburetor. 1960 Desoto 1958 Plymouth Fury 1958 Dodge Custom Suburban 1958 Plymouth Savoy 1959 Dodge Custom Sierra and a few non FL's Edited by grunau 2015-02-22 2:14 PM (3133s.jpg) (3133spg2.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 3133s.jpg (167KB - 132 downloads) 3133spg2.jpg (142KB - 129 downloads)
