Can someone school me on Hollander Interchange books please?

I'm from Australia and we don't see these books down here hence the question.

Have seen them on US ebay with descriptions but am a little confused as they seem to have quite a few different books.

I've seen Hollander Classic manuals and other Hollander manuals covering different years , then some that seem to target specific parts or bodies and ID.

I've seen some in 2 volume sets and some that are single volumes 6 inches thick.

So, as an example , what Hollander book would/should I buy to cover all parts interchanges for my 59 Dodge ?

Thanks.

There are several that would cover your Dodge. You are seeing originals that were printed back in the day when the cars covered were "recent", books that were revised and printed in following years that were trying to combine a lot of info, the "classic" books printed in hobby recent years to sell more books to us. Hollanders have some mis-information and some mistakes but generally are helpful so long as you have a big hammer, shoehorn and a torch to make everything fit. Anything that is advertised as covering and including your year should be helpful. I have two old originals bought decades ago and I have one of the two volume sets and use them all as needed. Still nothing better than factory OEM parts books. Personally I find Chryco (Canada) parts books to have the best listings and the best illustrations.

These were the "bible" for all the salvage yards in the U.S. for many years. (maybe still are) Mine is a 2 volume set that covers the years from 1954-1964 U.S. built cars and is a reprint of the original. It is amazing what will interchange even between different makes. It is a wealth of information and IMHO, worth the money. I believe I bought mine on ebay. The single volumes are probably originals but if you buy, make sure they are for the right years.

When car models became more numerous and more complex it became necessary for Hollander to issue several books that listed only specific parts. instead of a single book.

The single books cover a span of years, usually about 10 but sometimes over 20 for parts that had a long interchange history. My 1948 manual (13th Edition) covers parts back into the 20's and the 1956 (16th Edition) covers some parts back into the thirties and both are a little over an inch thick. The latest I have (69th Edition) covers up to 2003 and is comprised of seven manuals, the body parts manual alone is over six inches thick and weighs over 15 pounds.

If you expect a Hollander to cover all parts interchanges, you'll be disappointed; things like trim components and some non-wear parts are omitted. For a '59 Dodge, a 1967 or earlier edition would be what you want.

Hollander's 31st edition covers all the ForwardLook years. I've found some of the newer interchange books that are condensed leave out much important interchange, so I stick with the originals.

These three books cover domestic cars and trucks from post WWII to mid seventies, I use them daily.

Hola Terry

The same information is in every MoPar Parts Book. The problem is they are in The Forward Look Era - one year at a time. The 1959 Factory Parts Book shows every part used by
every MoPar Division only in that year. It is the same for a 1963 MoPar Factory Parts Book. A 1947 MoPar Parts Book is only The Division shown on The Front Cover.

As said ---The Holland Series will show that Other Makes ( StuderBaker - Rambler - FoMoCo or ~ ) may also use the same item.

The Car Series is for Cars and Trucks are for Trucks. If an item is used in both - it may not always say this.

Thanks for the replies , now I know what Hollander book to look for and what to avoid and not waste time and money buying the wrong book.

I know what you guys mean by the OEM parts book being year specific as I often find parts that look like they would fit my Dodge but have a part number that isn't for a 59 year model.

Then I have to take the time to search the online parts books trying to find the number in whatever year and what that specific part number was originally from.

Sometimes I have to search through quite a few years worth of online parts books which often take some time loading and sometimes I don't even find it at all.

Sounds like the Hollander books will be a good time saving back up book to my 59 Dodge parts book.

Cheers,

Terry

The same information is in every MoPar Parts Book.

Problem is, the factory often makes a minor change in a part that generates a new part number but that part might still be interchangeable with its predecessor. The Hollander is about actual interchanges rather than a comparison of part numbers.

In some cases the Hollander will advise that two parts that aren't a perfect interchange can be swapped "if" certain minor changes are made or accompanying parts are also swapped.

Thanks John,

Yes, I have noticed that some parts that seem to otherwise look identical have different part numbers which causes confusion as to whether I buy them or not.

Interchanging parts doesn't worry me as I'm not an absolute purist so to have a book that can offer parts interchanges individually or in multiple parts sequence would be a great help to me when it comes to deciding to buy or not.

Cheers

I ended up buying a Hollander 32nd Auto-Truck edition from Evilbay, covers 1953 to 1966.

Should give me some good what-fits-what interchange info for my 59 Dodge I hope .

You don't have to 'hope'. You can always come here and ask questions. That's what makes this club so great! Lots of people know 59 Plymouths here and they can help you too. There is also the 1959 spotr Fury club:

The Hollanders are great for interchanging major mechanical and sheetmetal components. As "StillOutThere" indicates the Canadian parts books do a really good job of detailing parts changes because they not only cover cars built in Canada, but also U.S. built cars that were sold in Canada as well as RHD cars that Canada exported - many to Australia.
