Unfortunately, the Detroit Chrysler Historical Society retains no records on CAN-built cars. The CAN build records were 'discarded' a long time ago. Your P/T plate merely confirms the basic information on your car, and none of its optional equipment and accessories. I wonder why the Windsor assembly plant didn't bother to retain their cars' Broadcast sheets, behind the glove boxes or under the carpeting, as they've been discovered, on (some-) US built cars? Also wonder what a Windsor Broadcast Sheet looked like? | ||

If Canada is like Australia though, its not enough for the government authorities, and it may have another number (incorperating the vehicle number and the model) stamped on the chassis rail. My dodge has the Australian one stamped where the steering box would be if it was l/h/drive, try looking on the opposite side to your steering box, maybe there, otherwise, the silver tag is it. The other tag is the body plate and is self explanatory (as far as what it shows) Someone should be able to decode the vehicle number though If its Canadian built, I dont think Chrysler Historical can provide you a build sheet | ||

Regular Posts: 95 Location: Saskatoon, SK, Canada | alright now if this is a canadian built Plymouth, how can I check to see if its a numbers matching all the way through especially the Engine because it has 23500 miles on it last driven in 1966..less then 10 years on the road. I have heard it is a 303 V8 with a 3 speed transmission push button | ||

And few provinces actually check on a VIN (unless it's an out of province vehicle) especially vehicles that are not worth great sums of money. As for numbers matching - no way. The VIN is on the plate attached to the driver's door hinge post and on the chassis frame while the engine number is stamped on the engine and on the frame. Have heard of people locating the chassis numbers but some found the numbers after taking the body off the frame. "Numbers matching" cannot be applied to any Chrysler Corporation car prior to January, 1968. The VIN - 96,928,768 - Canadian P31-3 (Belvedere V8) serial numbers ran from 96,921,601 through to 96,929,547, which means your is the 7,168th of 7,947 built. And that 7,947 includes Belvedere 2 door sedans and hardtops, 4 door sedans and hardtops, and 2-seat 4 door wagons. Convertibles and 3-seat 4 door wagons were imported and thus have US VIN numbers. The Body No is 4027, which means it is the 4,027th Belvedere V8 4 door sedan built. Paint Code is 1116, which breaks down as - 11 - Roof Colour - Icecap White (DuPont Canada - DU-438 / CIL - 2331-2117 / CPI-Ditzler - W8134 16 - Deep Turquoise Metallic (DuPont Canada - DUM-443 / CIL - 2352-2119 / CPI-Ditzler - 1190 Both colours are Canada-only. In the U.S. Plymouth had an Iceberg White, but it was code 8131. CPI-Ditzler used 4-digits codes for Canada-only colours with white colours having the letter "W" in front. A four digit number beginning with "8" in Canada meant a yellow shade. I do not have 1957 interior codes. The 1957 parts book I have was printed in December, 1956, (WM4364) and does not have any interior trim information. The engine number should started with "P31" and end with "C". That body tag layout, by the way, was used by Chrysler of Canada from about 1935 through to the end of the 1965 model year. The 1966 models adopted the US-style tag as Chrysler of Canada was now building cars for the U.S. market, Dodge Darts for the 1966 model year. Edited by Chrycoman 2014-08-10 11:16 PM | ||

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Your car is not really "numbers matching', unless your car's frame rail might be almost-imperceptibly stamped with its engine number (like the 57 Dodges were). That impression is virtually invisible, due to the lightness of the 'strike', and the fact that (as far as US Dodges are concerned) the strike was made through/into the already-painted frame, so that the paint absorbed a lot of the impression, and the paint deteriorated with time. Just show the authorities your VIN plate; they should already have many similar 50's MoPar's VIN's in their registration files. | ||

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | Some have found the VIN on the framr around the rear leaf spring's front hangar. Forget whether left or right side, and in most cased covered over by the body.. Used to be stamped front right side by the front axle. By the way, Chrysler of Canada did not have broadcast sheets until the late 1960's and even then the sheet was small with very little information. I believe 1971 was the first year Windsor used the full broadcast sheet. Chrysler of Canada used to keep the build records for about seven years. The purpose of keeping the build records was to help dealers determine the correct parts for the cars they were working on, including paint and interior pieces. Many small town dealers did not have body shop facilities or have a body shop in town. Thus the dealer could ask Chryco Parts for a fender, for example, painted the correct colour. No one back then considered people would be collecting and restoring those "new" cars and thus the records were not kept for more than seven years or so. | ||

Others were roller stamped mid-ships on the left frame rail like we see on 57 Chryslers. In his Regal Lancer Restoration thread, Paul also shows his roller stamped 58 frame. Greg | ||
