Expert Posts: 2788 Location: USA - KY | Original headliner - heavy duty rad, and is that a rad shroud for AC I see? Poor baby needs a good home, among other things. Makes ya wonder though if this ad is ligit'?...the #516 interior in this car is clearly black and gray in real life not "white/black", and I'm not sure that a '57 'Sweep could be ordered with factory installed AC? Maybe; I've just never seen one during the years of research I've done during the resto of my Firesweep...maybe this car will be the first. If that is metallic gold paint on the roof and sweep, it is not original. If this other Firesweep for sale on the same site is ligit', then IMHO it's worth three grand just for the unobtanium trim alone: roof trim, dagmars, rear bumper guards, etc... (Plus I really like the "patina" - a quick, light buff and clear coat and it would be super cool, if the car would just run, that is. ) http://classiccarsdb.com/desoto/59588-desoto-1957-coupe-sweepfire-s... Location: Parts Unknown | Sure, you could order factory A/C on a Sweep ! If Dodge could get it, the Sweep could too. It's just that most people driving off the DeSoto lot with a Sweep were going in a little light in the pocket and a loaded Sweep was a rarity. Most moved up the ladder and got a more upline model if they had the bucks for fancy options. The place to find an A/C equipped Sweep would be Texas-New Mexico, or Arizona.

I believe you, Doctor Desoto, but just curious if you have ever seen a '57 'Sweep with AC? I haven't, and I don't think 57desoto has either. That's why I say if the ad is legit', this would be a rare 'Sweep indeed, at least as far as the AC goes.

Location: Parts Unknown | I could not swear to putting eyes on an unmolested 57 (or 58) Sweep with factory A/C. Been beating my brain to put an image of the car with a fuzzy memry of having seen one. But I do have a recollection of doing so, and the reason it sticks in my head was because it was so unusual. See, ... back in the day, I sold parts. Had a yard full of cars, and those I did not hold in my own yard, I kept track of for how they were equipped in case I had a caller asking for such-n-such. It's half the reason I don't like Sweeps .... they were generally useless for desirable parts .... the very discussion we are having right now, ... how unusual it is to find a heavily optioned low end car like a Sweep. Anyway, the memory I have is finding such a car, but being bummed that all the bracketing would make it Dodge or Sweep application only, and that (at the time) no one was going to restore a Sweep. Everyone wanted a top end model in a coupe or convertible format. So, essentially, even though I had found a real great option, it was essentially worthless. Today, Sweeps are picking up steam for popularity and many restoration folks would be willing to make those A/C pieces work. The massive loss of all these cars as backyard junkers and the search ability of the internet has really changed our perspective ! As an example, there was a yard down in Yelm that had a rough, but very restorable all-black Sweep coupe. Straight bar side trim (no sweep on a Sweep !). All I found of use on it was a set of rear antennas. Today that car would be solid gold for a restoration candidate, yet it was probably crushed for having zero interest for parts or as a whole car. Such a shame. And this is just one of hundreds I had visibility on in my area.

It appears that you might know Rick, and maybe more info about this most interesting old 'Sweep? Are you able to share more info? It's always a good thing to more from studying these more-original of FL cars. . Trying to find parts for my old car was a bit of a bear at times, I must say...and my car was already fairly complete! So many parts have been lost forever. It was SO much easier finding parts and info/documentation for the other three 1957 Desoto models. Sometimes DeSoto parts would fit my car, sometimes Dodge parts would fit, and sometimes none of the above would fit, such as the "early-year" engine mounts, for example. Thank goodness I found such a talented fabricator to help me with my resto for those times when I just could not find those 'Sweep-specific, had-to-have items that I insisted on to make my resto as "authentic" as I could get it. It really is sad to think of how many old cars have been lost to the ages. Edited by FIN ME 2015-04-24 10:42 AM
