Location: Edmonton, Alberta | On first startup of my car with it's rebuilt engine and tranmission, (car in neutral), when I stop the engine, the car sprays transmmission fluid out of the dipstick tube with significant force.... enough to make a really big mess of my garage floor and freshly painted engine/engine compartment and anything in front of the car.
I did try starting the car up....with caution, and this is a repeatable event.
I've never heard of this happening before. Anyone have any ideas? I'm about ready to have the car towed to a transmission shop, but thought I'd see if anyone here had any ideas |

Location: Mid Atlantic | If you overfilled the transmission with too much fluid this could be one of the main causes. Transmission fluid needs to be checked in neutral on a flat surface with engine at normal operating temperature. If I remember from looking in my 57-58 Plymouth service manual on this issue, the other possible causes were blocked vent which is on the rear tailshft of the transmission. Front oil pump and converter could also be possible culprits.

Location: Edmonton, Alberta | Thanks for the reply. Only 5 qts of ATF in in that transmission so far... had filled it according to the manual just enough for first startup.
I was wondering about venting.... can you give me a little more information as to where that vent is located on the tailshaft? I'd like to check this out. I wonder if there's a possiblility that I painted it closed.... |

The breather is located at the top of the tailhousing flange where it mates to the main case. I remember reading a thread on another forum where they found the tailhousing gasket was missing the hole for the breather. |

Location: Michigan | Mine was the breather.... make sure you take it off and clean the hole with a pipe cleaner or brush and then do the cap. |
