Extreme Veteran Posts: 440 Location: Vermont | I recently replaced the wiper motor in my 1959 Imperial. The wipers work but now the circuit breaker is making a "click" Boing" noise. It only happens when the ignition is on. If I unplug the blue and black wires going to the wiper motor and it stops. Yellow and black do not stop it. If I unplug the circuit breaker the noise also stops but I loose my directionals. The first picture is of my old wiper motor with the wire I now have dangling circled. I thought everything was hooked back up but now I see this wire is loose. The blue end wire I reattached to the new wiper motor in the same spot as it was on the old motor. I still have this dangling black wire. Does this need to be grounded to the motor? Is it part of the fan electrical as now I have no heater fan? I took the circuit breaker out - hopefully I hooked it back correctly. I'm confused as to why the circuit breaker is now clicking on and off. Help! In my 56 Beast the wires are routed directly from the wiper switch to the wiper motor (cover on the gear with the connections). My Letter is more complicated because there is a coordinator switch routed between two of the wires from the switch to the motor. On a 1959 the service manual addresses that the circuit breaker is at the fuse block. The electric drawing of the Imperial shows a windhsield washer switch as well. [Edit]: The ground connection is typically routed from the carrier of the motor assembly with a copper ribbon to one screw of three screws holding the gear motor combo onto the carrier. I would trace the wiring from the switch to the motor, washer switch included. Good luck!
Happy Motoring!

You said the fan motor isn't working, was it working before? If it is factory wiring, I would assume black wires are grounds but you need a factory wiring diagram.

Probably a short. Do not ground that black wire!! The fuse block is OEM with the wiper/backup light circuit breaker inserted in the end. There should be no connection at all with the blower motor or the directional lights. Things are definitely cross wired, disconnect and reconnect carefully with an open service manual. Greg

All it does it trip when the amp load is higher than the rating of the CB. It may be that everything is normal but motor just pulls more amps than the CB is rated for, but don’t just replace it with a higher amp rating, that is how fires start. Contact the rebuilder/manufacture to find out the amp load of the CB, check the connections for shorts and test the resistance of the CB.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 440 Location: Vermont | Thanks guys. Everything was working except the wipers before I replaced the motor. The CB looks like it is original to the car. I wonder now why I have this dangling wire. I wonder if it was just tucked up under and fell down when I took the motor out.

Expert Posts: 1530 Location: ZH, Switzerland | I would trace where these two black wires are going to. The only one black wire from the fuse block (apparently from the CB) is going to feed the wiper switch. The black wire with the ring clamp reminds me at my Beast. Both wires are coming out of the heater fan motor at my Beast. The one with the ring is connected to the ground, while the other (black as well - clould be the one with the open end, probabley jumped out of a clamp) is routed to the heater switch. Personally I don't know if this is the same in later cars as well. If you don't have a 1959 Service Manual, here is one, pdf downloadable: http://jholst.net/59-service-manual/index.php
Good luck!

Extreme Veteran Posts: 440 Location: Vermont | Mystery solved! The wire attaches to the wiper motor bracket and now my fan works again. Must be a ground for the fans. Now to work on the circuit breaker...
