On a 55-56 Chrysler. Some time back, I posted this pic and wondered where they are used. No one could give me an answer, but Shep said he could set it wich a lot of work(trial and error) on adjusting the upper knuckle. These shims were offered by BEAR co. and are in different thicknesses. Well, just today, I figgered out where they go. On the bottom A frame on the pivot shaft. They attach at each end of the pivot shaft. This shaft is toward the inside , about a foot long , and attaches to the crossmember. Thing is, I don't know which end to put them on to increase positive caster. My thought is- on the back end side to tilt the kingpin back at the top. Any thoughts out there?....................MO

To increase caster they would have to tip the whole suspension up in the ft down in the rear, so they would go in the rear( lower arm), also to really do this right the upper arm should be shimmed, on my 55 I made up shims to do this on the upper arm frt attaching bolt, get a slotted GM alignment shim between the arm and the frame under the front bolt, just doing the lower tends to stress the suspension. BTW 1/32 will have very little effect, I used 1/8 shims and got about 1 degree more positive.

So Steve, did you end up using these shims to increase caster? How much caster movement can you reasonably get out of the kingpin adjuster? I was thinking of giving these shims a try in 3/16" thickness on both upper and lower arms to give me 1.5 degrees additional but it sounds like the GM shims might be better for this Shep?

Yes I used the GM control arm shims as stated, make sure everything is torqued when done.

I never did attempt to use my shims. The Chrysler drives-steers just fine, I don't put as many miles on as I used to , and what little ambition I have goes toward my 64 Dodge project.................................MO
