I'll be helping a friend this weekend with his 56 Plymouth. His cowl vent, between the windshield and the edge of the hood, is stuck. Any suggestions as to what would cause this and how to get it unstuck ?

Ron

Something is seized or bent in the lever mechanism most likely. It is basically just a slider on the bottom of the dash and them some arms that go up to the vent itself. I would visually inspect for bends and then try some penetrating oil on all of the joints. Have one person try to move the slider in the car while the other tries to gently pull up on the vent. The slider itself could be the issue too, the one in my '56 Dodge (same as the Plymouth) sticks and takes a little extra muscle. Just thoughts . . . .

Thanks, Depsilon.

I'm very familiar with 57-9 Mopars. But 56 is new territory for me.

This is what the area looks like on the 55 Chrysler. Note the picture with the heater ventilation system removed from the firewall.

Mine moves, just no air comes out of it. I haven't taken the time to inspect it but any ideas what would plug it up?

You have to open the flaps on the inside of the car to let the air in. note the black squares in the center of the firewall in the picture above. Those are the interior vents. They have a small handle with a rubber tip that you pull towards you to open and push away to lock, closed.

There are a couple of bellcranks inside the car that might need to be freed up with some good penetrating oil.

Update: Today, I removed the fiberglass heater core cover to replace the leaking heater core. This gave me a chance to inspect the cowl vent situation. I can't see anything that would cause the stuck vent problems. I can pry it up, but that's not the solution. So the next steps are to remove the cowl vent assembly. But I'm scratching my head as to how to do that. I see three screws at the top of the 'screen' area. on the left, center and right. These screws are currently rusted. If I remove these, will that remove the assembly, or at least give me access to screws that hold the assembly in place ?

I should add that this is a 'rod type' cowl vent, not a 'tube type' cowl vent.

Ron
