Location: Belgium, 40 miles south of Brussels | Hello everyone,
I bought a refurbished Constant Control power steering box (probably a later model : '61 or '62, as it had a '2-and-something' part number)
When I installed it on my car, I centered it approximately, using the "lock-to-lock and take the middle position" method.
I still have to restore the pump, so the system is not under pressure at the moment.
I know from the FSM that I can later adjust the "neutral position" of the steering box using the position of the upper valve body.
My question is : How much can it take ? Can I be really off center and still be able to adjust the steering to a neutral position ?
Thanks. |

Location: Belgium, 40 miles south of Brussels | I think you misunderstood me, Sven : I was not talking about the centering of the linkage.
I was talking about the neutral position of the pivot lever inside the upper valve body.
When your wheels are straight, that pivot lever is supposed to be at the neutral position inside the upper valve body.
That position ensures that no pressure is applied to the left or to the right.
As I centered the steering linkage approximately, I am unsure about the pivot lever position.

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | No misunderstanding Vincent, once you get the pump connected and filled up - then you'll start the engine and see if the steering gear "self-steer" in one direction - if not, then all is good. If it self steers to one direction, then the valve bodymust be carefully moved the other direction. |

The weight should be off the front wheels when checking for self-steer. |
