Veteran Posts: 169 Location: Cochrane, Alberta | Just finished refinishing the entire front end of my 56 dodge from the firewall forward, and replaced shocks, tie rod ends, etc as well as blasted and refinished all parts. Anyway, was assembling the drivers side front suspension today, and had a hell of a time getting the drum back on over the pads. The pads were quite new, so I left them and didn't touch or tweak the 2 adjusters on the inside of the brake plate that "tilt" the pads thinking that would help the drum slide back on. I have both brake bleed screws fully open to help the shoes fully collapse, but I still cant get the drum to go back onto the spindle. Anyone have any tricks/suggestions on how to get this back on so that it will spin nicely on the new bearings?

Veteran Posts: 169 Location: Cochrane, Alberta | Played with it all afternoon and got the drum on pretty easily after fiddling around with the shoes, but I have quite a bit of friction between the shoes and the drum compared to the passenger side. When I rotate the tire backwards, I can turn it okay by hand but when I try and rotate the tire forwards, it locks up pretty good. That was before I tightened the bearing nut down, and I tightened it after to spec and still have alot of drag when trying to rotate forward; I'm guessing it wouldnt let you push the car. Should I wait till I drop the engine in and see if a little bit of driving "seats" the pads where they should be? My worry is an overheated drum.

I don't imagine that the new linings are an exact match to the old ones. Also, be careful of the dust from the new shoes...it most likely still contains asbestos, as most of the vintage style brake shoes use overseas material, which usually contain asbestos.

Member Posts: 26 | you mentioned you 'didn't' tweek the adjusters before fitting your 'new' brake shoes, if so your new linnings will be fatter than your worn old ones and be a wider diameter to fit inside the same drum! slack the adjusters right off and see if the drum drops over the new shoes easy, hit your pedal a few times to centre the brake shoes as you re-adjust the shoe gap up again, if this doesn't work you might have a component of your brake assembly miss placed?
