My imperial made an awful noise when it was sat in, or hit a bump. I figured it was the collapsed leaf spring bushings. While they were very bad and I have replaced them, i think I found more of the culprit.

That was the mount for the upper trailing arms above the leaf springs that connect to the axle. the whole mount broke.

I am going to remove the bracket and have it welded. While I have it out, does anyone know which bushings go in those upper trailing arm leafs? There are two, one on the frame and one on the axle side.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate it!

I found the replacement bushings on Ebay actually, but $227! Wow. there has got to be a cheaper set somewhere...

That looks like stress cracks, check if something else is bent or damaged.

It may have been years of driving with a destroyed transmission mount, both ends of the leaf spring bushings were collapsed... I believe that is what destroyed the Ujoint.

Its been that way for awhile, the cracks are just as rusted as everything else (the car isn't rusty, but its not new metal)

If anyone has a parts car or knows what other years those support mount was used, let me know. I see in the shop manual a section on how to shim that so it stays true. Surely it wasnt different for many cars. It mustve just been the big heavy ones, our 1958 Dodge does not have anything like that. just the leaf itself.

P.S.

I found through RARE Parts the bushings it needs, for less money. Not much less, but about $40 and its 2 day shipping, for anyone else who needs them)

It's only the Imperial that have those as standard to my knowledge. I have dwelled about installing them on my Saratoga '60.....

Sven, I installed them on a 58 Dodge chassis. It took a lot of carefull measurements and jigging because I had to remove the axle brackets from the Imp. axle. Imp axles have a wider track and I think spring centres.

The bushings were a common size in those days.

I didn't keep the car very long and I didn't get noticeable improvement in the handling. But, I wasn't street racing the car either!

I swapped the rear in one of my Imperials for a later model unit and didn't bother putting those arms back on.
I didn't notice any difference in handling without them but as Greg said above, I wasn't street racing the car either!

The purpose of that system is to avoid that the rear axle turns during acceleration. That gives a totally smooth ride during full open throttle instead of the wheel hop that we know exists in the lower class cars.
So, it's more a comfort thing than a street race thing. For street race, just add a pair of sturdy traction bars
