Greetings,

Having some brake difficulty with the '61 Belvedere. Left rear was locking up on the slow roll forward so I took it apart to see what was going on and found miss matched shoes. Until I was able to get some new shoes I reassembled it and kept driving knowing that it might lock up. Started hearing a bit of grinding and determined that it was a warped drum rubbing on the dust cover. Took the drum in today and had it trued for the lining surface but that is not the problem. The face of the drum is warped and is rubbing on the retaining spring.

I need to replace the drum and have read about the separating of the drum and hub assembly. I've called the local auto parts stores and looked on line and EVERYTHING is a 10" drum. I cannot find an 11" drum in the aftermarket. Even the later 60's MoPars are closer to 12".

My question is this. Has anyone done the separation procedure? What drum did you end up using?

My concern is that the studs are swedged into the hub and the rivets are what hold the two together. If I remove the rivets will the replacement drum find "center" and stay there without replacing the rivets?

Oh yeah. I called a local brake and clutch supply outfit and explained to them what was going on and they didn't want to touch it. Said they don't do that kind of work. Really?

In the images you can see the light points to the low spot where the spring was rubbing. The lower image is of a rivet that broke off long before I bought the car.

Thank you gwaggoner. I saw this tutorial but was not sure about the replacement drum fitment for my (our) application(s). The video addresses the 62-64 b-body with swedged studs that anchor the two pieces together. It also swaps out the 10" drums. Which are readily available from your local parts supplier. Mine (ours) are mated with rivets and the studs are swedged into the hub. Same, same only different. If you look at the bottom picture you will see a gap surrounding the wheel studs. If the replacement drum has the same diameter holes there will be movement unless re riveted. I found some solid rivets through Mcmaster carr I just need to source some drums.

If it were me I would remove the old rivets, countersink the drums, thread the holes in the hub, install the drums with flush screws, (with a little anti-sieze). Many manufacturers use this to hold front rotors and rear drums on tight. John at BigM may have usable drums for you.

JC Auto didn't have the drum I needed so I ordered a replacement from Big M. Upon reassembly I found the inside of the drum still rubbing on the brake shoe return spring. Axle shaft end play is well within tolerance so what could it be? I found that there were shims placed between the rear brake adjusting plate and backing plate so I removed three of those and no more grinding.

Is it as simple as that or could there something else at play here?

I believe those shim are there to set the axle end play. Do you still have enough end play?

I didn't have to remove any of the shims between the axle flange and backing plate. I already determined that the end play was not the problem. While perusing the FSM I came across an image referring to the distance between the backing plate to brake shoes. In between those is where I found the additional shims. Without having the factory special tool to measure the exact distance I opted to just pull a couple of shims and reinstall the drum to see if it was still grinding. No more grinding.

It seems too easy. Even though the shoes are the same width wise I still had to adjust the spacing? Once I get it all back together and on the road for a test I will update the post.
