Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | I thought I would change my trans mounts today with the nice weather. Unfortunately I can only get my car up high enough that to use both hands, I have to slide under with my arms extended so I can't really see too much. The shop manual only shows an exploded view of the mounts alone with no description on how to remove them or picture of it attached. I suppose if I could get it on a lift, I would be able to see how it works. I'm guessing you start by removing to 2 end bolts in the mount pictured. I did that and jacked the tranny up a little. What holds the pictured mount to the trans? I can't see anything that bolts it to the trans. Do I need to remove the frame bracket? I wasn't sure of what I was doing and didn't want to jack the trans to high and hurt something if i was wrong so I thought I should ask first.
Thanks for any help,
Karl.

The two holes in the center are for the bolts that hold it to the trans, the bolt heads sit in the recessed areas.
Once the outer bolts are removed, you'll need to elevate the trans and remove the crossmember to access the center bolt. |

Sounds like you need to get the car up a bit higher though, you do need to see what you are doing

Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | Got it. Those rubber "plugs" in the new mount look so permenent that I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be there. Obviously now I see they are just part of the production process. Remove them and the bolts into the trans set up inside them so they don't interfere.
How much clearence is above the trans? I almost felt like I was starting to lift the whole car but the pictured mount[on the trans] had seperated at that point from the trans. You are right, I could have see all of this if I could have had more clearence.
I think I can still do the job with the heigth I have just wanted to be sure what was happening before I went any further. It would be nice to have a lift but I am just an old school shade tree mechanic and anyone that has been turning a wrench for well over 40 years has worked under a car in tight spots.
Thanks again,
Karl. |
