Do you mean the thread or the head of the bolt? The bolt head is a 7/16" and I believe the thread is 1/4-28, but not certain. The head of the bolt is sunken into the cap a little so a small 7/16 socket is the best tool to use to loosen it.

The new master cylinder I just purchased has 1/4-20 threads. Not sure of the length.

The thread is 1/4"-20 but the length varies with the design of the cap. (some are more "domed" than others)
