Expert Posts: 1267 Location: San Antonio TX | Ok, so I've been looking for a carb and manifold, and in the process I've come to realize that I don't really know what engine I have in my car. It's a Canadian Windsor, which from what I have researched, is the equivalent of the American Newport and came stock with a 361. The engine was rebuilt by the previous owner (and presumably pulled out for rebuilding) but I am not 100% sure that the engine in it now is a 361 since the car was partially restored and may have had the engine swapped out in the process. The original owner said it was a 383, and some 383 parts fit, but a starter for a 383 that I bought recently from Summit did not. This has made even more confusion since apparently there is a 383 B and RB. For all I know it could have been swapped out for a 60 383 RB. I don't know enough about the parts interchangeability between the 383/361/B/RB. How can I identify the engine by directly looking at it rather than just going off of the VIN or guessing? I want to be sure what I have in there before I buy parts so I don't have to subject myself to the headache of returning parts that don't fit. Sorry if this is a novice question.

It will be next to the head on the driver side. If it's a B engine, it will have a boss sticking out in front of the passenger head in front of the cylinders at the same angle as the block. On these bosses will be stamped numbers that will help identify the year and engine. On a B engine, these numbers can be lost if the cylinder deck is machined.

Expert Posts: 3575 Location: Netherlands | The type of transmission dictates which starter is used, not the engine. Castiron transmissions (upto '62) use a different type of starter than the later, gear reduction models, which are the more common 'whiney' Chrysler starters. 350/361/383/400 Mopar engines are B-engines. Only a few rare early '60 383s are RB-engines. 413/426Wedge/426Hemi/440 are RB-engines.

The "B" Block (fist pic) will have a machined pad underneath the distributor. Notice how the of the waterpump housing is flush with the top of the engine deck. The "RB" Block (second pic) will have the raised pad between the water pump and the intake manifold. It may be difficult to see if the car has factory air conditioning. Also notice the 1/2 inch or so of extra material between the waterpump housing and top of the engine deck. Expert Posts: 1267 Location: San Antonio TX | Ok, so the engine is definitely a 'B' block, but the stamping raises more questions. From what I've researched, it should be just one letter and five numbers (Xxx-xxx), but instead, I have this: RC1- 1811C I would assume that the 'R' indicates 1961. The rest of the code doesn't really match up to anything I've found online. Any idea what this is supposed to mean? Is this some sort of Canada only block stamping?

Expert Posts: 1497 Location: Fairfax, Minnesota | Taken from my Canadian 1961 service manual: R indicates 1961 as you stated. C1 indicates the that it is a US Newport/Canadian Windsor. C2 = US Windsor/Canadian Saratoga C3 = New Yorker I can't see my pad very well, but if I remember correctly, one of the number strings startted with 36 for 361 38 = 383 41 -= 413 I am sure some of the Canadaian experts will provide more complete information.
