Mom & Dad brought me home from the hospital in this car ... thus beginning my love affair with Exner's Forward Look designs ... at just one week old! Unfortunately, they sold the '59 in 1965 ... replacing it with this 1964 Plymouth Sport Fury Hardtop:
So my question is ... Were the "BUILT ESPECIALLY FOR" glovebox door plates a standard factory item? ... or something that the Plymouth dealerships provided to each of their customers? Edited by FIN-ATIC 2009-05-16 2:48 AM

Location: Parts Unknown | Back when cars like this were to be found in wrecking yards, I pulled a couple of these tags off the GB doors. Many times they were not engraved with the original buyer's name and just left blank. At least one I have is still blank. Too bad this idea wasn't used in 56, 57, and 58 too.

I found the answer to my own question on the 59SportFury.net website ... checkout the bottom of this page from a 1959 Plymouth Salesman Manual: The text on this low resolution scan may be difficult to read ... so here it is in larger font:

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | This plate would make a perfect example for that new-fangled digital object-copier, which was discussed on this board, and which some bright person can now go and post a thread-reference, here, on that machine. Todd, your family-name was actually engraved onto that plate, huh. I'll bet that not many people went to the trouble and expense to have their car's ID plate be engraved. Wow, I thought that those plates were routinely installed on all the SFurys; only on the Customer- ordered car.....? Think that this car might still exist, somewhere? What size engine was that 64 SFury running? Edited by d500neil 2009-05-16 3:15 PM

d500neil - 2009-05-16 12:08 PM Todd, your family-name was actually engraved onto that plate, huh. Yes it is. Think that this car might still exist, somewhere? I'm hoping so ... but I don't know its VIN ... I'll I do know it that it was Powder Blue and had a darker blue vinyl interior (with cloth inserts) ... and that it had California license plate number KZX 228 on it when my father sold it in 1965. What size engine was that 64 SFury running? I'm ~90% sure it was a 383 w/ 4 speed.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1049 Location: Auckland, New Zealand. | It WAS available on 57 and 58 Fury also, although the design had changed for those years and they were mounted on the carpet over the trans tunnel instead of on the glove-box door. And those ones were reproduced....down here in New Zealand. All sold now though, but taking orders for the next run if there is any interest. Glenn. Location: Parts Unknown | Interesting ! I never knew this. I don't know production numbers, but it seemed for every 58 Fury I found back in the day, I found ten 57's, and for every 57 I found, I found ten 59's. In all that "finding", I never saw a single 57 or 58 with a tag like these .... just 59's. .... old dog, new trick ?

FURY (Glenn), Your reproduction '58 Fury plates look beautiful and seem to be of very high quality! Are yours also made of bronze? I assume the '57 Fury plates are similar (or identical) to the '58s and have the same slight curvature? Any plan to reproduce the '59 Sport Fury plates?

Elite Veteran Posts: 1049 Location: Auckland, New Zealand. | The thing with the trans tunnel carpet mounted brass plaques....is that, as we all know, the carpet is one of the first things to go in these FWDLK Mopars, due to water getting in, and so I guess as the carpet was thrown out, the owner probably put their bronze plaque on a shelf somewhere. When would you ever find a 57/58 Fury in a junkyard with the carpet still intact....? Whereas the 59 Fury plaques were located high and dry on the glove-box door, ensuring there survival. Glenn. Elite Veteran Posts: 1049 Location: Auckland, New Zealand. | The reproduction plaques, when finished, were indistinguishable from a NOS one. Yes the 57 Fury plaques are the same as the 58's. Yes they were cast in bronze, polished, then plated, then the recessed detail painted. No plans to reproduce the 59 Fury plaques, I doubt there would be a high enough demand to warrant the high set-up cost involved. Glenn. Veteran Posts: 249 Location: Spencerport, New York | My 58 Fury, deceased since 1964 had the plate mounted on the glovebox door. Although long gone I still remember the first owners name engraved on the plate!

Location: Parts Unknown | What a great tribute, ... to have the original owner's name. On a plaque, no less ! I wish Mother Mopar had seen to it to do that with all their cars.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7808 Location: Williams California | My rustbucket '59 Sport Fury convertible still has it's plaque on the dash, with the original buyers name engraved on it. The car was found in upstate New York, and I did a google search on the name engraved in the plaque [it's not a common name], and found very little, except possibly the widow of the buyer, and the info posted was from 1969, so there is a chance that she is no longer alive either. Her info mentioned Ithaca, New York, which is close to where the car was found in the wrecking yard. ---John

Extreme Veteran Posts: 481 Location: The Netherlands | Do you have one? If it's a 59 I might be interested! I know a guy at Carlisle has a NOS 57-58 plate for I think $200 or $225 but he has it with him every year. Form59's i guess they are worth between $150-200 NOS and $50-75 for an engraved plate but that depends on how badly somebody wants it
