Elite Veteran Posts: 943 | The starter went out on my '57 Dodge wagon and I need a rebuilt one. Any one have a good source, at a reasonable price. Also what do these starters interchange with besides 57-58 Dodge? 57-58 Plymouth? Thanks! Garrett

Veteran Posts: 139 | Thanks if it were me i would take the starter to a local auto electric shop and have it repaired. The last thing i would do is exchange it for an unknown quality "rebuilt" starter.

Veteran Posts: 109 | FINS, did you ever get a replacement and if so where did you get it from? My 58 Dodge needs a new starter as well.

Expert Posts: 3778 Location: NorCal | I'd take a chance on the rebuilt below, it's gotta be better than the slow-turning original. http://www.hothemiheads.com/transmission_adapters/starter_replaceme...

Veteran Posts: 109 | I'm going to take a chance on the starter, for that price it's worth a shot, plus it gives me time to rebuild my original starter and have it ready down the road

Expert Posts: 3778 Location: NorCal | Let us know how it works out, I'm tempted to try the new-style starter even though mine is working OK.

Elite Veteran Posts: 943 | Just saw the replies to this post. I took my starter to a local rebuilder and it came out great, was $150. If anyone wants his contact info I can post it he's been doing it for 35 years, has a lot of parts for these things too.

Veteran Posts: 109 | I ended up buying the one from Hot Hemi Heads. Basically it's a 1970's style Dodge starter. It's a direct bolt on except in my case because I still have the solenoid on the fender, I needed to install a jumper wire between the solenoid on the starter and starter motor lug. 3" of wire, a couple terminal lugs and that was done. I got it installed 2 days ago and gave it a quick try. So far so good. However I don't have a radiator installed as that sprung a leak and I didn't want to run the engine so I turned the fuel pump off. Needless to say I didn't see how quickly the new starter will actually start the engine but it did crank faster then the stock starter. I hope to have the new radiator today or tomorrow and do a full test this weekend.

Veteran Posts: 109 | Yes, the only "fitment" issue I had is this new starter has a slightly larger body so getting a socket over the bolt is a challenge. The lower one is easy because it's right under the car but the upper one is wedge between the block and the starter and access is from the top down betwen the exhaust manifold, steering column and brake booster.

Maybe. I was able to get it good and tight with a universal on the end of an extension. You can see the bolt from the top down, you just can't get the leverage to tighten it. The other day I was watching TV and saw an infomercial for some kind of periscope style ratchet extension. Something like that would be perfect

Extreme Veteran Posts: 395 Location: upstate new york | I've had my started re-built 2 or 3 times now..Each time is $200-$300...kept filling up with water...I finally drilled holes in the tranny inspection plate and problem is no more..We surmised that the water was running down the windshield, down the firewall, onto the tranny motor connection and into the starter...Starter guy is good but kinda expensive....lessons learned
