What do you mean by holes? The VIN tag doesn't have any holes in it. It has 2 indents from where the tag is spot welded to the body. Are you talking about the data plate? Is a 300D different than a New Yorker in that respect?

There are stamped holes in the (serial number) before they were installed on the cars. The intent was that the weld attachment be through those holes. Vast majority of the time that happened. Sometimes they only missed a little bit. I've seen numerous tags where they completely missed and the holes are obvious and never touched with the welds off to the side.

I'll try attaching a picture of my '59 DeSoto VIN tag which is factory original and shows no holes. I'm not sure the Chrysler 300D would be exactly the same but could have been.

Some things changed in 1959. Yes, that plate includes your VIN for the '59 DeSoto. This plate is commonly referred to as the DATA PLATE because it includes the data for the ordering codes of equipment on the car. The VIN for the 300D is on a stainless plate with no other data in the left door jamb on the hinge pillar and is spot welded on.

The VIN on my '57 New Yorker never had holes. It had some indents that were spot welded. You can see the bottom indent that was missed by the spot welder. This is a Los Angeles car, so not sure if there were differences based on where it was made.

There does seem to be a correlation between where it was built and the lack of holes or not. Among my cars:

'58 Firedome, Detroit: Holes
'58 Coronet, Los Angeles: No Holes
'57 New Yorker, Los Angeles: No Holes
'57 Windsor, Los Angeles: No Holes
'57 Windsor, Detroit?: No Holes
'56 Plymouth, Not sure: Holes


However, that '57 Windsor is not the same. Were the Windsors built in a different plant?

My '59 DeSoto never had a plate on the driver's side door jamb - but the holes are there. Someone pointed out long ago that Firesweeps built at the Dodge plant didn't get these so I guess my data plate serves as the serial number or VIN as they are referred to now.

I had asked because I believe I came across a car with a fake plate. After further researching, the VIN belong to a coupe, not a convertible. I knew the tag was new, but seller tried to say otherwise. I knew the answer to the question I asked, but I wanted others to stand up and prove my point. Thank you guys! The seller has now realized what has happened. A restorer had sold him a car with the wrong plate.

Nathan's second pic shows what a Detroit built 300D, VIN plate should look like. The VIN plate would have two holes in it. These two holes lined up exactly with the two holes stamped in the door jamb. At the end of the assembly line, a stainless steel VIN plate would get "loaded onto a a spot welder jig by its two holes which then got pushed into the corresponding two holes in the door jamb". The trigger was pulled which spot welded the assembly together!

Hey, one of my beer drinking buddies who worked in Detroit did that job!!!
