Hi

I have some problems with my A-488 Torqueflite transmission - when driving around for a couple of hours
the transmission is not acting as it should - i.e. when I am activating the "N" push button (neutral) the car
is going in reverse. The oil is changed and the oil temp is around 180-200F - any idea what is wrong??

Nice ride Oliver - welcome to the gang!

Most probably the shift cable is wrongly adjusted!

You need to drain the transmission and pull the pan.

Have a helper pushing one button at the time while you check the semi-crescent arm with the detents for the different positions.

If not, then you must adjust the cable until all the positions are correct.

Thanks for your info -
but I think the issue is more complicated i.e when I start the car everything is normal
the transmission is shifting as normal - but after driving for an hour the problems start
i.e. when I push "N" the car goes to reverse R , the car stays in R even if I try to activate 1-2 or D
the only way to get the car out of R is to stop the engine ,wait for a couple of minutes at the I am able to
get the car back to N and start the engine .

Hmm, that might indicate a warped valve body or nicks on the manual valve - you still need to pull the pan - disconnect the shift cable and check that the manual valve moves freely in the valve body.

Check and confirm the shift cable adjustment - if the ball is not in the proper detent, then the manual valve can leak and strange things might happen.

Another check is that the transmission isn't overfilled or have too low level of transmission fluid - this might lead to air bubbles in the fluid, in other words cavitating which can do strange things to an automatic transmission
