Expert 5K+ Posts: 7808 Location: Williams California | These were actually anodized aluminum, rather than stainless. To my knowledge, nobody makes reproduction ones in aluminum, although Jim Rawa sells a kit using Mylar that is used on the majority of the Christine clone car restorations. ---John

Member Posts: 18 | Hi Paul, unfortunately NOBODY offers anything that looks as good as the inserts on your convertible right now- [thatnks for the plug John, those are my inserts on his car!] I know some people say they "settle" for my mylar, but that project is over now anyway- I no longer offer it as my manufacturer has quit production for what will be 4 yrs this past summer, So... if you have myinserts, cherish them! there's nothing out there that loos better, is dent resistant, wont discolor with fuel spillage, or adds a more brilliant appearance to your Plymouth than even NOS or mint original anodized inserts. AS A SIDE NOTE.... I DO HAVE 2 SETS OF 58 PATTERN GOLD INSERTS LEFT, $435 INCL US SHIPPING TO FORWARDLOOK MEMBERS. to clear up some misconceptions... the movie cars all used aluminum inserts, depending on the scene, they had originals, originals painted silver [argent] like the grill, tail light housings, etc [see Bill Gibson's restored movie car up close- like the day it rolled off the set!] as well as a diamond pattern aluminum insert, much like - or exactly like- Marcel's in Canada. the diamond inserts are nice, I've personally installed one set on a car I'm building with a friend, and another friend installed them. for the money they're good- especially if the mylar scares you... but nobody else, exc for one failed attempt and still not validated as to actual production ability, has done the legwork to produce, ANODIZED, TRUE 58 PATTERN, ALUMINUM INSERTS.

Member Posts: 18 | OK, I'LL PUT THIS OUT THERE... we had a running list of persons who would jump on the real insert bandwagon if production could occur... Dave Stragand and I have reviewed that list, I noted that of the "x" amount of interests... some people have sold their cars, died, already bought my mylar inserts, or cant financially dive in right now... down to 25 or so prospects out of a list of over 100 if i recall correctly... IF THE FORWARDLOOK COMMUNITY REALLY WANTS GENUINE 58 PATTERN ANODIZED ALUMINUM INSERTS.................DAVE AND I have the manufacturer locked down to execute the project....HOW BAD DO YOU WANT THEM??????????????????? WE WILL HAVE TO COVER TOOLING, MATERIALS PROCUREMENT, AND PRODUCTION, THEN CUT AND FINISH THE INSERTS. AN INITIAL RUN OF 20 SETS WILL HAVE TO BE MADE, THEY WILL HAVE TO BE PRE-PAID, AND MAY TAKE U TO 6 MONTHS TO BUILD THE HYDRAULIC ROLLER, THEN RUN AND ANODIZE THE MATERIAL. THE COST PER SET WILL BE $13,200 EACH FOR THE FIRST 20... THAT'S NOT A MISPRINT. THAT'S WAHT IT WILL COST AFTER WORLDWIDE INQUIRY OVER 6 YEARS. IF SOMEONE CAN DO IT CHEAPER, PLEASE STEP UP! until then, its paint, keep my mylar on your car, or go with the Canadian diamond pattern.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7808 Location: Williams California | Jim is completely right- Even though there is a strong '57-8 Plymouth community, the numbers pale in comparison to '57 Chev , mustang, muscle car, etc owners. The initial investment would take many purchasers to bring the price down to reasonable levels, which is why it does not happen with these cars. ---John

Expert Posts: 2524 Location: Houston | Well...I don't claim to 'know' but it's hard to believe that kind of money is needed for a patterned aluminum. I hate to say this...but the right person (who had the contacts) could get the material produced in China, Taiwan, or some other such place quite cheap. There would be the costs associated with cutting them and anodizing and shipping but I still have a hare time thinking it would come to $13K per car. Again, I don't know the specifics but the 20 x $13K price sounds like what we in the industry call a 'get lost' price - meaning we really don't want to do it but if you really pay us enough....' I think the problem is one of sourcing. You could also sell sheet of aluminum along with paper patterns and leave all the cutting to the car owner. Oh well, glad I don't own a Fury that needs 'em!

Expert Posts: 2788 Location: USA - KY | I've mentioned Jamey Jordan before; maybe he could help? He's a very gifted metal fabricator, and can do wonders with sheet metal of many sorts. I saw him on some auto-related TV show a while back, and then contacted him about some work that I wanted done for one of my non FL cars. He does custom work of all kinds. He made this custom piece for me last year from a sheet of aluminum, and it wasn't that pricey. I just sent him my design and a template, and he got the final product back to me in several weeks. Might be worth it to contact him? http://handmadeseatco.com/v1/ http://handmadeseatco.com/gallery/index.php?level=album&id=13 http://handmadeseatco.com/gallery/index.php?level=album&id=106 http://handmadeseatco.com/gallery/index.php Good luck! Expert Posts: 4043 Location: Connecticut | John Cote of the Chrysler 300 club had 55-6 Chrysler/Desoto door sills fabricated. The Swedes made up 57-9 door sills for all except Plymouth. Both are/were available for around $400. Might be worth contacting these folks to find out who the used as a fabricator. Both are anodized aluminum. Ron

Expert Posts: 3967 Location: DFW, TX | My girlfriend works for a roofing company. They sell many different materials and have many different contacts in the industry. They get most of their materials in China. I feel pretty confident a batch could be made for less than a quarter-million dollars. Hell, a whole shipping container loaded with it could probably be had for a tenth of that. Is there any real interest out there? It seems like most of these cars are either "done" or "basket cases" with very few in-between cars that need a full set of Sportone and would be worth buying it for. I also think the market could be expanded if the stainless trim and elbows were also available. Just a question, does anyone repop FL Mopar stainless side trim or mouldings of any kind?

I do make the reproduction stainless elbows, and have also made quite a few sets of the vertical 'Upsweeps', using pieces cut from damaged trim sections. Pictured are original '58 Fury inserts, the Belvedere would use silver anodizing though.
