Location: Rochester, NY | Picked up a 56 Imperial for a father son project, the car came from California to New York and someone took the 354 hemi out for a hotrod build and sold the rest of the car.

Location: Lower Mainland BC | Congrats (and condolences ) Too bad about the loss of the engine. Hopefully you will be able to find a suitable replacement engine. It might be appropriate to consider a late model Hemi from Chrysler 300C or Dodge Charger/Challenger.
On the upside, I think I see a 5 button shifter bezel, i.e. the car has a cast-iron A-466 Torqueflite, one of the first ones. It also appears to be liquid-cooled (no vent panels in the trans bell housing). If you could post a photo of the body data plate (not the VIN plate), it would help establish when the Torqueflites were introduced in the late run 1956 Imperials.
I have done many of the restoration tasks that now face you. Most of those have been documented here. Some of the one that come to mind include the following (there are more):
The inspection panel:

The floor:

Carpet:

Kick Panels:

Good luck
(PS: I think your shifter bezel looks like this):

Location: Muskego, WI | I see 5 push buttons as well, a huge upgrade on a heavy car like an Imperial! Rear end gears should either be 3.36 or 3.07, so it will be a good cruiser.
