Expert 5K+ Posts: 9904 Location: Lower Mainland BC | I am gathering parts for a Powerflite to Torqueflite conversion for my 56 Dodge D500. I was thinking that the air-cooled 57 Torqueflite would be the easiest choice for me. However, I have been in contact with someone who has made the conversion on his 56 D500 and he is strongly suggesting that I should go aluminum case A727 from a 1962 Chrysler (because of the drum eBrake). Like the photos attached (that I found in an old for sale thread). Any leads will be appreciated.

The 56 motor has a longer crankshaft and a different way of bolting up the torque converter. The 62 trans uses a separate flex plate that the torque converter bolts to. The 56 has a torque converter with the starter teeth all in one piece. The 61 trans should work a lot better as its the same design as the 56. The "friend" is Dave H**stad from Minnesota who had his own D500 website where he documented his many modifications to his 56 D500. He sent me his 8 page single-spaced WORD doc and a ton of photos on how to do the transmission swap. The transmission core he used was a 1962 A 727 (for an A series small block engine e.g. (318 poly)). He says that an A 727 from 62-65 would work. The tail section with the drum eBrake came from a 62 B727 (i.e. from a big block, 361, 383, 413). He used an after market 24 spline/10 bolt torque converter. He also used a TR Waters adapter plate: https://www.trwaters.com/product/early-hemi-transmission-adapters/ In discussions with Dave yesterday (by email) he suggested that I could reuse my PowerFlite Torque converter, etc. if I wasn't going to be drag racing the old girl. But really I have no clue on this swap so I am taking Dave at his word. | ||
