Does a 1955 331 hemi need a ballast resistor.
The 331 in my car had no resistor..... not even a resistance wire.
This engine was a replacement for a 315 hemi..

No 6 volt system needs the ballast resistor. So if you are still running 6 volts, or you have an internal ballast in your coil on a 12 volt system, you are fine.

Hmm....A 315 hemi = a 56 Dodge motor which would have been fed by a 12V system, which did use ballast resistor (if stock).

Any details on the 315? Like an engine number (stamped on the flat area beside the oil filler/breather tube, above the water pump, ahead of the valley cover)

My car always had the 12volt system.

Yes it was a D500 engine and I scrapped it 25 years ago.
The previous owner dropped the 1955 331 Hemi in after blowing the 315 up.
I am leaving sleeping dogs lie since the 331 is proving to be a great engine!
Yesterday I found the Vacuum advance was junk and most likely the cause of my issues.
Just waiting for the part to arrive....

While you have the distributor out, install a PerTronix electronic ignition. Easy install and she starts the first crank.
