Does anyone know how to remove the bottom dash trim next to the windshield? I have through the part manual and the service manual and neither show this piece. there must be a clip holding it in place but I am afraid to pull too hard and wreck something that I can't fix.

Del: Others (somebody from Finland (Ralf) or Sweden (Per E.)) might have a better answer but as far as I know, that piece was put in *BEFORE* the dash was installed, i.e. to remove it, you need to remove/move the dash enough to get at the nuts on the studs on the back of that trim piece (hidden from above and, I think, blinded by the dash from below).

I could be wrong but having spent more than a few hours under my dash, that is my assessment.

The part is called "DEFLECTOR, Windshield Defroster" with PN 1607 892 in Section 23-66-133 of the 55-58 Parts Manual. I agree that it doesn't show in the 55-56 Dodge dash diagram.

I hope I am wrong about the dash out bit.

I was wrong about nuts and studs. It's screws, tabs and clips. Kind of works out to be the same thing. There are five of screws in the locations of the tabs on the top of the dash shown in the diagram above and the photos below.

I am thinking that a) the deflector is attached to the dash panel before the dash panel is attached to the interior *BUT* if you remove the interior "A" pillar covers (which hold the ends of the deflector down), it *MIGHT* be
possible to tilt the deflector towards the windshield enough to get a screw driver in there and remove the five screws. God help you if you drop a screw when you do the reinstallation.

Some photos that might help:

Del: The photo below is from my car, 10 minutes ago, drivers side, through the windshield. Not great but it's as good as I could get it.

I see four components:

1. The light blue of the defroster deflector
2. The dark blue of the tab on the dash panel
3. A rusty clip nut that has been placed over the dash tab
4. A fairly coarse galvanized metal screw.

I think that the screw goes through a slot in the defroster deflector and through the slot in the tab on the dash panel and into the clip nut.

On that basis, I think that the screw must be accessed by gently prying/wedging up the trailing edge of the defrost deflector (the slight slot you see when sitting in the driver's seat)) *AFTER THE A-PILLAR INTERIOR COVERS HAVE BEEN REMOVED* (???)

Found some photos of Per E.'s build of his TorqueFlite-equipped special order 56 Dodge convertible. The first photo shows that there are tabs on the permanent portion of the cowl that I presume are what both the dash and the defroster deflector end up being attached to. The second photo shows Per's beautifully restored dash installed on the cowl - but no Defroster Deflector strip yet. So it must be possible add and remove that strip without removing the dash (???)

Per: Hope you don't mind me using your photos. It would be great if you could tell us how you installed the defroster deflector with the dash on.

Ha. Figured it out. Took off the driver's side A pillar trim and then pried up on the deflector panel so I could see the screw that I had seen through the windshield. Pried a bit more and BANG!! The first spring clip let go. That is the answer. Four or five strategically placed spring clips. The screw is part of what holds the dash to the car.

UPDATE: Pried a little more after dinner/supper. I saw another spring clip coming in from the left (above the oil pressure gauge) and believe that there will be one spring clip in the middle = 5 clips total. Tomorrow. (Or another day, Del has his answer).

YAHOO! I followed Dave's lead and held my breath and up it came. I used a piece of rubber for padding and a wide scraper to pry against and the smallest pry bar I have. Left to right one at a time. Easy to locate the clip position, just slip the scraper over until you touch it.

I removed all 4 pieces of inside perimeter trim around the windshield, I media (glass bead) blasted the A pillar trim and used paint stripper on the top and bottom trim pieces as my blast cabinet is not long enough for the other 2. OK now, I am getting ready to paint all the inside trim and am wondering......
The original paint on the dash was a sort of flat paint. Dave F pointed out it was a special paint, not flat, not gloss and not enough texture to make cleaning difficult. Yyg*

The question is, should all 4 pieces, top, bottom and A pillars also be a flat colour also? Or should these be a gloss?
