I am currently working on cleaning up my 1958 Desoto Firesweep floor pan and making a few patches for the few holes that exist.

1) There is a replacable bolt on section of floor pan in front and under the driver's feet. I have two small holes in this pan. I was preparing to weld some patches in this to repair it. However, it has ocurred to me that I might be able to find a new one. Does anyone think that it would be possible to find one in good shape? Do other Mopar cars have this same part?

2) The floor of my car appears to have orignal stuff on it that looks like some kind of ruberized undercoating that some floor insulation was stuck in (that is removed). It appears that this stuff that looks like some kind of rubberized substance, when combined with the insulation under the rug, could help deaden the road noise. I want to clean up my floor pan before installing the rugs. After this is done I was going to put some of the foil padded insulation (that comes on rolls), on the floor and then install the rug ontop of that. Here's my question: Originally I was going to remove everything on the metal surface and then paint it with POR15. However, after seeing that this ruberized stuff is all over (but it has flaked off in many places) I am starting to think that this would be a big pain in the neck to remove it well enough to paint POR15 instead. I assume that other people with similar vintage cars had the same stuff. What do you recommend? I could easily chip it off in some places but in other places it is very stuck. What did other people do? I have seen lots of cars with nice smooth painted floor pans.

IF YOU TAKE A SMALL PROPANE TORCH AND HEAT THE RUBBERIZED COATING, JUST A LITTLE, NOT MUCH, YOU CAN TAKE A PUTTY KNIFE TO SCRAPE IT OFF. IT WILL COME OFF REALLY EASY, JUST LIKE BUTTER. I FOUND THIS OUT WHEN I WAS REPLACING MY FLOOR. HOPE THIS HELPS.

THANKS, CRAIG.

Hi Rebecca,

I have removed this same stuff during my 56 DeSoto resto. I finally tried a little air chisel, and that went great!!!
It's even fun work.Good luck!!

Rebecca...

Not to try and dissuade you from looking for a replacement driver's steering unit access panel, but a LOT of the panels are rusted out in these cars.
The reason was they used a felt gasket, and it trapped water. If yours only has a couple of small holes, then you are in better shape than many (including me). I finally used the remains of about 3 old ones to make a template, and fabb'd my own as a replacement.
I would really suggest that when you put it back together you totally pitch the old felt gasket, and make your own out of sheet rubber.

I agree with you tha POR is the way to go on these floor panels. Great product, and it does actually encapsulate and stop the corrosion. I would take the time and effort to get all the old undercoating off. It is worth it.
