We have. I "determined" that the VIN number was too early to have a D500 engine from the factory. I can't see the intake manifold but I would put money on it being an Offenhauser aftermarket. The air cleaners are all wrong for a real 1956 D500-1 (they are more for a 1957 Super D500). The engine number stamping looks wrong (photo from my archives below): The VIN is earlier that Hunter R's D500-1003 (3rd D500) engined car: (18895136-1956-dodge-royal-lancer-std.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 18895136-1956-dodge-royal-lancer-std.jpg (108KB - 57 downloads)

More than something is fishy with this car. Only an image of its IBM card would convince me that it was real. Here is an image of the stamping of the third D500 engine number, D500-1003 (not no Dash between D and 500). Note that the "D" is a proper D, not something made up a line and part of a zero "0". And a later one, D500-3509 (the stamp design changed but still no dash between D and 500 and the D is proper): Edited by 56D500boy 2021-12-01 3:20 PM

Elite Veteran Posts: 631 Location: Lubbock, TX | Agreed, it’s practically impossible that an earlier VIN would be given a much later engine, unless it was a field installation to replace a blown motor, or to upgrade the car to the D500 package? Either way, a data tag pic and IBM card would solve the mystery.

Either way, a data tag pic and IBM card would solve the mystery. Unfortunately, I have looked at a few cowl data tags from legitimate Detroit and LA built 56 Dodge D500s and the tags do *NOT* say anything interesting in regards to D500 (or not). Needs the IBM card (like mine) to legitimize the car as a D500 (in various flavours) The problem with this particular Coronet is the 35047838 VIN places the car as a Detroit built early December car. 35045683, according to a data base developed by Bruce Faulkner, was built on Dec 7th. Hunter R.'s D500-1003 engined car with a VIN of 35052811 was scheduled to be built on Dec. 16th. So this 35047828 would be somewhere in the middle of those two, but before Hunter's car, so there is no logical reason that this Coronet would have engine D500-1735, i.e the 635th engine built, installed before Hunter's D500-1003. IBM card needed. Edited by 56D500boy 2021-12-02 9:32 AM

Elite Veteran Posts: 631 Location: Lubbock, TX | Had a buddy at the event, he verified that the engine stamping pad was shorter in height than other 315 Hemi's. That, combined with the weird stamp font, is proof to me at least that the pad was machined down to remove old numbers and then the D500 was stamped by rudimentary means. It's possible that it's a poly block, maybe even the car's original engine. Oh well, it sold for that same money at BJ 2011, so I guess that's what buyers are willing to pay. I sold my CRL which was far nicer for $33k a little over a year ago. ~Peter
