A while ago I fitted a Mopar electronic ignition with separate control box to my Dodge 270 still using original coil ran well but in app 500 miles blew 2 control boxes. voltages were checked and found to be correct , so today I fitted a HEI electronic ignition with coil etc integral in the unit a lot cheaper also about $45 for the unit plus carriage and import duty for me being in the uk this unit only just fits in past the inlet manifold about 1/32 clearance .also requires moving the throttle linkage rod over about 3/16 and making a new throttle return spring bracket after that slotted straight in timed up and running very smoothly I just thought I’d post this for info photos attached but I cannot make them open on the thread
Ps had one of these HEI units in my 61 Chevy C20 for 3 years

I sell a conversion kit that allows you to use the HEI module with your stock Chrysler electronic distributor and is small enough that it doesn't require you to modify anything.

You can see the bottom of it in this picture on the 361 in my '58 Fireflite.

Then there is the Pertronix II or III conversion that would allow you to use your stock '50's distributor as well. More expensive, but looks stock.

Phil: Sorry to hear about your bad luck with the drop-in (for your low block 270 poly) LA engine style electronic distributor control boxes. I wonder whether the issue is Chinese made VS US made (??)

Summit Racing certainly has a wide variety of units including a PerTronix version. And then there is Nathan's well-priced HEI conversion bracket to consider.
