I have noted bad sealing material i most gaskets on several applications.
Water pump gasket that cannot withstand water is just the latest issue.
The blue FelPro seems to be the worst gaskets.

I had this on a Firebird and now on my Saratoga - the gray gasket material seems to be dissolved by the cooling fluid. It's a slow process, but still bad.

The water pump gasket started to leak after 14 years, some might think that this is good, I don't.

Any one else had simular experiences?

I had a similar situation a few years ago on my 58 Plymouth poly 318. I bought Felpro neoprene valve cover gaskets for it, which I've used in the past on other applications with good results. I could not get those things to seal for the life of me. I ended up taking them off and used a tube of Great Stuff gasket maker instead. It's not cheap, but it seals tighter than a drum. I would not put an engine together anymore without it.

I coat the gasket with a very thin layer of gray RTV before I put it in. No matter what it's made of, it won't affect it.

Nathan, the bad gaskets dissolves from the center of the material and outwards, hence it won't matter if one coats them with RTV or even brown death (Permatex). When I changed the water pump in 2009 due to worn bearings, the original gasket was still without any problems and I could peel it off in one piece. Stupid that I didn't reuse it with some brown death.

Quality can't be bought anymore, even if you pay dearly..........

Hi Mike, Did you use the great stuff gasket maker all by itself to make the new valve cover gaskets? If so, is it stuck real tight now or did it stick to just one side so you can still pull the valve cover?

as for the 318 , you gotta keep the cover mating surface straight especially on the saw tooth . take a certified straight edge
across the saw tooth on the head , i'll bet you find it to be convex , thats why the cover needs to be straight. + most people just don't
clean the saw tooth good enough with solvent. ---------------------------------later
