Elite Veteran Posts: 990 | My '61 Plymouth is leaking the transmission fluid from the shifter cable, looks like it's leaking out through the cable. There's a gold band on the cable at the transmission end and it seems to be leaking from this area. What is the cause of this and what can be done to fix it?

There's a gold band on the cable at the transmission end and it seems to be leaking from this area. What is the cause of this and what can be done to fix it? Because the cable attaches fairly low on the transmission, at least the first part of the cable is actually below the fluid level in the transmission. Therefore there is an O-ring at the end of the cable and there is also a rubber jacket around the metal cable housing to help keep the fluid from leaking around or through the shifter cable. If that rubber jacket deteriorates or rips or whatever, transmission fluid will leak out of the cable, even if the O-Ring is okay. The solution that I (and others) have used is heat shrink tubing over the existing cable. REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=46178&... Expert Posts: 3778 Location: NorCal | The '61 has the threaded adjuster which is larger than the cable so shrink tubing can't be slid on from the trans end; to use shrink tubing, the cable has to be removed and the tubing slid on from the shifter end. An alternative is to slit some rubber hose lengthwise, apply RTV liberally and use a clamp to hold the hose in place. A bit more work to do that but *I* think it would be better than the split hose and RTV alternative. But what do I know? I've just done it the one way, with the shrink tubing and my cable was already off the car so easy peasy.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8947 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | i like a short piece of hose run from the top of cable down to the bottom(@ 6-8"piece) and spring clamped onto the old cable collar . the spring clamp will always keep tension as the shrink only shrinks to a point and stops ------------------------later http://forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=55957&post...
