Location: Northern Illinois | hi all, anybody know the thread size of the rear axle drain plug? mine has stripped out, have to drill and use easy out to remove. thanks. |

Location: So. Cal | Don't use an easy out. Use a welder and weld a blob or something else to it that you can grab and twist. The heat will loosen it up. |

| I believe the plug is 1/2” NPT. A pipe plug, which is a tapered thread. Does it have or did it have a square hole in the plug? The square hole was made to use a 3/8” (or 1/2”) power bar or the likes to remove the plug. Like Powerflite said, weld something to it, the heat should help break it loose. Good luck!

Location: Northern Illinois | yes, the hole was square (round now) and your right i believe it was 3/8. ill try the welding technique, wish me luck!! |

Location: So. Cal | You would be amazed at what I have been able to remove with that technique. Very rusty Dodge hemi heads that have sat outside for 20+ years with broken exhaust studs. Cleaned them up and welded something to grab onto it. Sometimes it would twist right off, but weld it a second or third time to get better weld quality, and everyone of them came out. |

| If you can get a bite on it you might get lucky by heating it, let candle wax melt into the threaded area, and try a hammer and chisel to break it free. I should be clear, not to break it up but to hit it in the direction of removal.
Welding is usually my last resort but has never failed me.

| As suggested, “heat”. Welding something to the plug will also provide the heat to break up the rust that has built up in the thread. Frozen bolts are a different subject, if you give the head of the bolt a good smack (or two)straight on with a hammer that will break the rust in the threads. This could also work for loosening your drain plug if you can figure out how to hit it with out creating another issue. Good luck.

Location: Northern Illinois | the weather warmed up enough for me to get the car out and bring it to the shop and raise it on the lift. my game plan is to pound a bolt into the rounded part of the plug then weld. hopefully it will work. ill keep you posted |
