Member Posts: 48 | Does anyone have any original pal nuts for sale. I'm trying to finish attaching the chrome pieces on my '61 New Yorker. I'm finding the modern replacement pal nuts don't work good with the the re-chromed trim pieces . I have tried many different sizes and brands, but they don't secure as good as the originals. I need about 6-8 qty to finish. Let me know if you have any. Thanks. Zak | ||

Up here in the Great White North, I can buy smaller that 100 quanities through Geno Industries. Member Posts: 48 | Thank you for the link. I'll continue to look and see if I can find something that works. Like I said above, I have tried a few different brands and sizes but nothing seems to lock on properly. The trim pieces have been re chromed. It seems once the chrome covers the stud the newer Pal nuts don't fit properly. They're either too big or too small. The original pal nuts work the best, but unfortunately, I wasn't able to save all my originals. | ||

I understand your situation but I think that the original PAL nuts are working because they have been previously stretched open (a bit) during their initial use. What I see that is available currently are sizes that increase by 1/16 or 1/32. If I was in your situation, I would pick a size that is a bit too tight and then find a way to "stretch" the opening over something (e.g. nail held in a vice, pointy end up) using an appropriate socket and significant downward force. And then trying the stretched PAL nut on one of your studs. I see these sizes in the Auveco catalog: 1/8, 5/32, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, etc. I would imagine that the 1/8 or the 5/32 are the most likely candidates for your trim. Elite Veteran Posts: 692 Location: Finland | These push on(or thread making) speed nuts are also an alternative . I used these on my Coronet with home made fasteners. Push ons wouldmaybe be safest if you happen to find the right size. It is easily done that you destroy the fastener when you try to make new threads in the chrome. Some chrome shops leave the threads unprotected, they should know better. Member Posts: 48 | Yes, I agree the chrome shop should have protected the threads. I was surprised when I got the parts back and saw the threads had all been chromed. Some thicker than others. It was a chrome shop that should have known better, but just because a shop has been in business for many years doesn't always mean the current staff has been there that long. Thank you to those who posted some good information and tips. I'm going to try a few of them. Zak | ||
