I have subject car with a bad 2/3 synchro. 230 flathead 6. My friend told me he has a good working 3-speed pulled from a '57 Dodge 1/2 ton truck (owner wanted auto). Does anyone know if these transmissions will interchange, if not, which years/models WILL interchange? I realize that the present trans can be fixed (found synchro online), but I am hoping for a simple "plug-and-play" alternative first.

Thanks!

This isn't going to help you much but the PN for the complete 1956 Plymouth 3 spd manual non-overdrive transmission seems to be 1635 573.

I took that number (as 1635573) to the 1950 to 1965 Mopar Parts Interchange pdf but it didn't go very far. All it said (on page 91 of the interchange (93 of the pdf)) was:

"18 1635573 std trans N.A.
Plymouth '55-56 w/O.D. ;exc Fury"

So the PN is good but.....

Good luck.

The interchange manual says that they don't interchange. But there is typically always a way to adapt it if you are willing to make modifications. Sorry, I don't know if the bolt pattern & extension are the same or not. That would be the first thing to check. But the worst case is that you would need to use the truck bellhousing, flywheel, clutch & starter, and create new mounts for it.

Thanks for the input, actually that is some very helpful information. I looked at the '57 trans, and the first thing that struck me was that both shift forks go in from the side cover. The '56 has one coming in vertically from the top. So won't work, not easily, at least. Anyone know where I can get a good trans (non-OD) for said '56 Plymouth?

The interchange manual says that they don't interchange.

Thank you. Would you mind looking up a 3-speed from a '54 Plymouth and see if that is a good interchange?

Thanks again for your help!!!
