Purchased new by Howard Hughes in 1957 this rare car was used for a few years and then put into storage. In 1976 Brian Jackson purchased the car in a 3 car package through Mr. Richard Gandfor, an administrator for the Summa Corporation, the holding company for all of Howard Hughes Enterprises. Documentation includes copies of cancelled check from Hughes Productions, letter of authenticity from Brian Jackson and letter from the Summa Corp. *TITLE IN TRANSIT*

The Hughes’ convertible is a powder blue 1957 Chrysler Imperial, Lot #1278.1. With a 392 c.i.d. V8, the Imperial pushed 340 horsepower through its automatic transmission, making this one of the most performance-oriented of Mr. Hughes’ fleet. Brian Jackson found the Imperial in the same storage room that contained the 1953 Buick Roadmaster that was sold at the 2005 Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach event, making it one of the most rare and historically significant vehicles in any collection. It is rumored that this car was used by Hughes’ girlfriends, as it was unlikely that the germ-phobic recluse would ride in an open car.

Think again..... Chrylser, Desoto and Imperial had 4 headlights on most of the vehicles. Many states had passed new headlight laws by the first half of 1957.

I read some where that the law changed on January 1st 1957. I'll look up that information again to post it.

The price on that car is insane, Im not really one for the history of a car though. Its a shame because with the howard hughes ownership and the price paid for it the car is destined to sit in a museum Even so, thats a gorgeous car. I love the lines of the 57 imperial and miss ours dearly. The lines on forwardlooks lend themselves so beautifully to a convertible.

A museum or some movie star fanatic or something...

Nevertheless, the price will ensure that it survives, won't it?

The car will definetly be preserved for a long time to come. They can't all be drivers, there have to be some people with enough self-control to not want to do some open air imperial cruising.
