......

Pretty some I'll be buying the parts to rebuild my '59 Dodge's front suspension/steering.

And I'll obviously need the special socket to remove/replace the upper and lower ball joints, along with WD 40, socket bar extension and will have to look up my 2013 'cussin word dictionary for the appropriate 'cussin words to use when it won't undo !! .

Without jacking up my Dodge and rolling under the front end with vernier calipers in hand to measure my ball joints, is the one I'm looking for a 1 and 59/64'th inch socket , 3/4 drive ( OTC 8033 "small ball joint socket" ) ??

If so, I can get one new for approx $56 plus shipping

There is a larger 2 59/64 socket "large ball joint socket" ( OTC 8034 ) but I have a feeling the ball joint on my '59 Dodge just ain't that big......... the 1 59/64 seems more like the right size.

All help appreciated,

Cheers,

Terry.

get a good one or you'll be doin more than cussin . the cheapies love to slip if not 100% square on -------------------------------------------------later

psssss .... if you heat around the ball joint , on the control arm , it will come out a ton easier . it don't have to be burnin skin hot or hot enough to do
metal damage . it will also screw back in easier while warm also . it doesn't take much heat to enlarge the circumference of the hole !

Thanks Chuck,

The one I'm lookin' at comes from Summit Racing but I have no idea how to work out whether it a good one or not ???.

It's listed as OTC 8033 and that's about all it says except that it fits Chrysler blah, blah, blah from blah, blah, blah to blah, blah, blah ( won't fit early blah, blah, blahs however )

Maybe I might be best to look up that Miller one that Mick has ??

Ok,

Yep, I have oxy/acetylene welder/cutter here at home. I intend to heat it up slightly but wasn't going to mention it on here as sometimes people seem to think that heating suspension/steering components ALWAYS means heating to a glowing red which I never do. Light heat is fine and doesn't change the structural integrity of these components to a point where they become unsafe contrary to the thoughts of some.

Chuck, keep that between you and me......... OK............don't tell anyone............

Terry, I would roll under that ol' girl with the vernier. Who knows if or when or with what the originals were changed in the last half century. Measure twice, cut once I was told!

I have a socket here I could loan out. my new joints are in, and I cant see me doing them again soon............ I can check it's size if you want, I cant remember the size now but it fitted my 60 Imp.

Thanks Steve for the offer of a loan.

Had a roll under the car today verniers in hand , the ball joints are 48 ish millimetre or 1.9 inch .

I was about to buy a Sunex one on evilbay today until I read they are made in Taiwan so probably Snap on or Miller might be the go.

Anyone know how about the quality of OTC tools as I can get one of then too.

Info for the Imperialists who read this. My socket is a 2 & 1/8", SK part No 84689 socket. This fitted the old and new joints I bought for my 1960 early production Imperial. Old joints were in servicable condition, and probably were original, new were MOOG and specific to the Imperial. I only changed them because I stripped and re-built the front end.

I haven't checked lately, but in the past, OTC tools were always best quality made in USA but kind of pricey.

Nothing wrong with being cheap, and I was thinking about making my own as well, but an instant tool in hand without the time needed to make one swayed my desision

went trough the same dilemma a few month ago, did a lot of research but lucky for you here are the answers.

Do not buy any junk from summit like Chuck advised me, buy OTC or Snap-On.
what to buy?
well they are to different sizes for our cars ( it is a third but for newer cars) a small and a big, you are using the small the snap-on number is S9365A is around 1.9 inch diameter. EBay is your answer, you can buy it new but a good used cost less than a 1/2 of the price.

pictures attach, including what is a vernier, which is a must have tool!

Thanks Hemi for the pics and info

I've sort of got a really good condition used Snap On one lined up ( S 9365A ) but from all the confusing info I can find on the net ,this number ( from one info source at least ) states that S 9365A is 2 9/64 which is too big for my ball joints.??

This same source states Snap on S 9365B is 1 59/64 which is the size I need.???

I've also found MAC tools SC 29 which is 1 29/32 ( pretty close to 1 59/64 )

SPC Performance 6880 which is supposed to be 1.906 inch ( pretty close to 1 29/32 )

SK tools 846880 which is 1 7/8 ( approx .5 mm smaller than 1 29/32 )

And the OTC 8033 1 59/64 mentioned above

So there would appear ?? to be a few different size ball joint socket sizes within a few thou inch sizes from each other, so I'm guessing that these may be just some "rounding" off measurements and that they would probably all fit, some maybe a bit tighter fit than others maybe.

I've also found this ball joint spanner as well although it doesn't state what size ball joints it fits ??

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Spanner-Wrench-for-1968-89-Chrysler-J...

Hemi, could you confirm what size the Snap On S 9365A is in reality for me please?

The Snap On website doesn't list them anymore to check.

Thanks.

Well, good luck with that tin can opener I had a 3 feet pipe as extention and it was some work demounting the old ones. A good quality socket is needed. (see also Hermans DIY solution)

I bougt this one, Sunex Tools 10213 3/4"Dr.1-59/64. have no idea about quality. but someone in this thread says Taiwan, thats good for me. they have some better thing to. sometime even better than "made in Usa". :-)

if you use a cheap one , the first time it slips off , look at the socket . if it has a groove on the edge from the slip , then i guess it would be
considered cheap ----------------------------------------------------later

Just wet up the threads with a god portion of penetrating oil Conny, let em soak overnight. Since you will take the control arms out of the car you can easily use a good bench wise with some soft protection for the control arm. Have a helper to press the socket downwards and use a 3 foot pipe extension - pull slowly and steady and they should let go just fine.

I was glad that I still had the arms attatched to the subframe when I did mine

Wow they were tight, I had to use a 6' pole on the end of my 3/4 drive bar.
