Location: Parts Unknown | soiouz - 2013-11-08 2:05 PM By the way, you Desoto specialists (Doc? Ed?), what's the story on the body trim, when the car is monotone, as this one? I've seen monotone Desotos with only the upper side trim, and some examples, like this one here, with the lower moulding too.. ================================================ I will only speak to 57-58 cars here .... BASE line side trim was a single "rub strip" bar (the standard upper piece) without the lower one there to create the sweep. This was standard on all Firesweeps and Firedomes. The added lower moulding set was extra cost. At further extra cost was the second color added to the roof and sweep. So, right there you have THREE different variables ! Add in Spring Special aluminum inserts (on 58 only) and that was a 4th. Fireflite and Adventurer were top-line models and only available with the sweep or color sweep (Adventurer was color sweep only and had the added sweep dart insert at the kick up in 1958), adding even more variables ! The vast majority of 57-58 DeSotos were optioned with two-tone color sweep and roof and full face wheelcovers, even though these "glamour items" were extra cost items. Same with Torqueflite automatic. That was a $220 additional cost item on both Firesweep and Firedome. I can count the 57-58 cars I have seen without TF on one hand. This gives the illusion that DeSoto's standard features were different than what they really were. But who would be buying a flashy new DeSoto and NOT pony up the extra bucks for those glitter items ? Afterall, George Jetson might stop by !

Expert Posts: 1489 Location: New Castle PA | What has already been said about the 57-58 DeSoto side trim options is exactly right, Doc also added the comment about there being so few without the auto transmissions -- like him, I only know of a few cars with manual trannies.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 566 Location: Wichita, Kansas | Chrysler (Dodge conv.) and no mention of the 2x4 392 mill in the rod? hehe. Almost makes you wonder if that Dodge convertible is a D500 or D501. Black, white top, black and white interior. What a cool car. Edited by 58 300D 2013-11-12 1:58 PM

Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Some (most!!) of these photos are agonizing to look at, causing you to want to go back 'into' the images and have some heart-to-heart conversations with the people in them, and/or with the cars' owners. That 5-window A-coupe, above, appears to have permanently-open exhausts, and no windshield wipers or a visible license plate, but, it's got headlights on it...for 'street' driving? But, that 57 Dodge vert is where I'd like to take Mr. Peabody along for a cruise back into time. If you look through the A's backlight, you'll see that that car has 14" wheels on it, so, at least, it is not a D501 (which all have 15" wheels on them)...but, is that car a D500 or a Super D500 model (with twin carbs)? The barely visible front of fin piece looks like the Coro/Royal piece, and not the bigger/fluted Custom Royal guy, and, it's got plain glass in it, no right side rear view mirror, and maybe a front fender antenna, so it may not have been heavily optioned.....typically like many of the Coros. The single body-color was standard, too. Its top appears to fit perfectly, and it was probably very-new when the photo was taken.
