These two guys should be best friends:

http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-classic-cars-1960-DESOTO-C...

http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-1960-Dodge-Des...

The first one is a 1960 Desoto 4 door sedan that is, according to the seller "mint", but will require "a tune up, paint".. He will only accept offers of 20k$ or more!!!...

The other one is even better: a 1960 Desoto Adventurer coupe, "the only one in Canada", according to the seller (I personaly know of at least 4 or 5 just here in Quebec)... He's asking 160k$!!!!!!! I guess it's the only one original, factory one-off "missing fin emblems special edition"!!

Geez...

The coupe looks very nice, but he must be nuts if he thinks it's worth that!

Maybe he will find someone who really believes it's the only one in Canada, but that sure is an outlandish claim.

I wonder if anyone does know roughly how many of the 3,092 Adventurer sport coupes are left?

I like how the ad for the 4 door says that it's 'mint' but will need a tune up, paint , motor and trans.

I bet the guy with the 4-door saw the other guy's ad and thought his car must be worth at least $20,000 if a TRULY mint 2-door is worth $160,000.

the seller doesn't dictate "market value", the BUYER does...

if anyone believes otherwise, i have a '55 Coronet, base model, three-tone, three-on-the-tree sitting in the garage that i'll "sell" for $200,000 (i'll even let the "buyer" decide if that dollar amount is US, Canadian, or even Australian)...

The coupe is the only one in Canada with a toilet set rear deck, that color, that exact "lottery"
combo of options, AND three corndog sticks, two gum wrappers, and 2,461 dog hairs hidden
within the car. And we all know what mint condition used corndog sticks are going for these days!

As for the sedan, looks like the hubcaps need a tuneup as well. But that supermodel manhunk
strategically placed in the photos oughta make the sale, regardless of the car's condition. Great
marketing, eh ?

Those three corndog sticks are historically significant as they belonged to three corndogs eaten by Jerry Lewis during the filming of "The Nutty Professor" in 1963!
If you inspect each stick closely they have Jerrys monogram and caricature.

I ment Canada, thinking out the perception that this is a US-based forum.
Doc, brainfreeze at your current 20 would be highly unlikely to me unless you're on a huge hill or something

Come to think of it, going from my location, I'm on about the same latitude as for instance, Calgary, and coincidingly with similar temps unfortunatly it seems.

The birdbath deck lid wasn't offered by factory on the 1960 DeSoto, even the Canuck jobs - so my 1960 Chrysler Canada Parts Manual shows. This one does however have a correct DeSoto style wheel cover on it so someone went to some trouble, as the deck lid wheel covers are not quite the same as the regular wheel covers in that there is no valve stem hole on them, but there is a tiny drain hole and they use a mounting system not found on the regular wheel cover.

Maybe they are asking Canadian tire money, it has been 20 below here in Alberta a week ago, that system has moved east, towards Saskatoon, so brainfreeze might be possible.

How about we all contact him and offer him something over $ 20.--?

That "birdbath" decklid really clutters up the rear of that DeSoto!

I am grateful that DeSoto was spared the indignity of the toilet seat.

I don't like them on the '59 Furys either.

I kind of like the bird bath on these - my own has one. BUT yes, they do somewhat interfere with the overall streamlined Forward Look styling, and continuity of the deck lid. But they're cool

With Exner's Forward Look being so angular and "swept", I never have understood how he allowed
giant bullseyes and circles into his design consciousness (?) The big side targets on the upmodel 59-
60 Plymouths, 59 Fireflites, the always argumentative "toilet seat" (we'll let Ian call it a "birdbath" to
retain at least *some* dignity! ) are so clashing with the smiley face bumpers, long, straight fins,
and otherwise crisp, angular lines of the cars.

But it WAS a sensation in the day. I don't get it, but it was a sensation at the time.

my first encouter with the "birdbath" / "toilet seat" was the '57 Studebaker Golden Hawk...
i have not see *ANY* make/model where that 'design feature' looks "cool", it looks butt-arse UGLY on *EVERYTHING* it has ever been used on !!!

but "to each their own", "eye of the beholder", or whatever you wanna call it, "i'm right, you're wrong", lol...

Well the super expensive "mint" sedan is back for sale on eBay at 37k$!!!!!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DeSoto-1960-Desoto-Adventure-All-org...

Quote from the eBay ad:

"I have been getting a large number of emails from ebayer's telling me that my starting price of my Desoto is too low....that I should increase the price to $75,000 -120,000 becuase a simular car sold on Barret Jackson for $ 180,000 Jan 14 / 2011............

However I am not going to increase the price.........it will be my loss if it sells for $ 37,000 - thanks "

I emailed the guy and asked him if the starting bid at 37k was a typo and he responded back saying: "Thank you for bringing it to my attention. It should be $300,000" Then I got another email telling me that "the car has no carbs, motor turns over by hand, oil is still thin and flows good."

What does anyone think this guy's $75-$120k sedan is actually worth. Looking at the ad my humble guess would be arround about $7/8k

I'd say a couple thousand is the max for this car, in that shape... and there are better cars around here for 2k$ if one wants a sedan, for example there's a 1957 Imperial sedan in better shape than this (yes, including the Hemi) for 2k$ OBO.

I think this seller is a little "thin" on brains...all he would have to do is research these cars online and see what similar ones have sold for and are selling for.
There is a beautiful light green one thats in excellent condition online right now,but it isnt missing its carbs and doesnt "turn over by hand" so clearly its not on par with this guys!

Going back to the Brentster's questioning of the derivation of the commode-ious protuberance, on certain Mopes' deckids....
that design was originally a fully functional feature on at least one early 50's Chrysler Dream car (too lazy to look up
its proper name or a photo of it, or its spare-tire-remover system in operation).

That faux-feature harkens back to the 20's-30's full-classic cars' fully enclosed side-mounted spare tires.

Over the years, Chrysler was able to incorporate quite a few of their dream cars' features into their production cars.

The subject car's seller has obviously been hitting the Canadian Anti-Freeze, or, maybe he merely has joined a certain
Canadian Club, to while-away the winter months, as he dreams of migrating to La Florida with the other Snowbirds.

I just couldn't resist dropping this guy a line thru EBay. I told him I thought his price was not in line with the market value, and that I own a 60 Fireflite that is running, not rusty and looks great.
Here was his reply. Make your own conclusions.

thanks the boys at Finned Mopar website, because every time I list someting that gets the eyes of collectors, I always sell my items for higher prices.....I sold a average Saxaphone about 5 months ago for $ 7500.00 its market value was
$ 1200.00 but because it was posted on a collector website, the right buyer seen it and bid it up to $7500.00......as far as the Desoto, I have rejected a number of offers in the $25000 to 32,000 range so while I understand your comments, I also know that when any collectible item comes up, there is a few different types of bidders,

Now for the economy, where I live everybody buys a new car every two years, they upgrade their homes every 10 years, yes the USA was hit hard because Wall street thugs, and the Law should be chasing those bad guys but they are not.

Would you sell me your car for $50,000 if it passes my estimators valuation they put on your car.

Tell him to move the decimal point once to the left and he's about right.
