Extreme Veteran Posts: 591 Location: West Chester, PA | If the phenolic plate that holds the contact pins on the back of your P/W switches are worn out like mine, here's a helpful tip. You can attempt to replace the plate with new phenolic, or pvc. You'll need it to be 1.6mm thick to fit. I made a couple out of plexi, but it kept cracking. Too brittle, The factory switches for these Mopar cars were built by Packard Electronics, same as GM cars too. I do not believe that they were related to the Packard Automobile Co. The Packard Automobile Co. used P/W switches made my the Delta Electronics Co. No relation yet, but stay with me on this one... Saturday, while at a car show, I noticed that the 1955-1956 Packard P/W switch looked a lot like the 1957-1958 Mopar switch. I went back out to my truck and grabbed my broken switches. I met a Packard parts vendor in the flee market who had boxes full of P/W switches. BINGO! The actual switches are interchangeable. They fit into the Mopar bezels and share the same exact plugs too! The Delta switch body is made of one solid piece of plastic, unlike the Mopar ones which are made up of two plastic sides and a phenolic back plate. They do not wear out like the Mopar ones do. Even the master 4 control switch fits too! I bought a bunch of nice used switches, and even found one NOS switch. They have a much stronger set of springs in them too! They were not too expensive, and would save you tons of time compared to rebuilding your worn out Mopar switches. When installed, you can not tell any difference either. Please drop me a line if you need help locating some for your car. They may work for other years too, but I only know about the 1957-1958 cars. Check out the pictures below, the Mopar switches are on the left, and the Delta switches on the right... The last picture is two Mopar bezels, one has a Mopar switch installed and one has a Delta switch installed. Hope this helps! -Ron Edited by phurious 2010-08-08 11:20 PM (CIMG7682.JPG) (CIMG7683.JPG) (CIMG7690.JPG) (CIMG7693.JPG) (CIMG7697.JPG) (CIMG7698.JPG) (CIMG7696.JPG) (CIMG7685.JPG) Attachments ---------------- CIMG7682.JPG (57KB - 319 downloads) CIMG7683.JPG (43KB - 311 downloads) CIMG7690.JPG (67KB - 316 downloads) CIMG7693.JPG (76KB - 311 downloads) CIMG7697.JPG (42KB - 306 downloads) CIMG7698.JPG (49KB - 316 downloads) CIMG7696.JPG (46KB - 310 downloads) CIMG7685.JPG (63KB - 312 downloads)

The 1959-60 Chevy Impala Bel Air Power Window Switches look a lot like the 55-56 Mopar ones. They are being re-manufactured new and are available in 1-gang, 2-gang, and 4-gang units. Check out eBay item 380132324978, or 350365093108. These fit a slightly smaller rectangular holes, and they have connection posts you'll need the special connector for, or you can solder the wires on. Expert Posts: 1352 Location: Springville, CA | Just get some 1/16" fiberglass circuit board material. Get the kind that already has the copper foil etched off. It won't ever break and is a perfect insulator. Loyd

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | I broke the "phenolic" back plate of my master door switch while cleaning it, on my 60 Saratoga and was able to easily cut a new one from a piece of plastic from the lid of an old plastic parts tray with a lift up lid, made of softer type pliable plastic, not the hard styrene type. It works perfectly.

The differences between the two(+?) versions of the power seat switch involve the mechanics of their spring loaded electrical contacts, and a lot of them have warped bakelite backing plates, which also affect their electrical contacts' operation---IIRC.

The circuit breaker is rated 30 amps and that's kind of high current, so if something goes wrong, or you have a bad contact, or water in the switch - the plastic will surely melt.
