One of 675 1958 Imperial Convertible's originally built and believed to be perhaps one of only 20 road worthy unmolested Imperial Convertibles that remain today.
What we have here is one of the only original factory Matador Red Imperial convertibles ever built (Paint code PPP) with several important options including speed control.

It is a two owner car that comes from a respected family in central Colorado. The owner was high up in the police department and was well liked and respected in town. The car was purchased from the original owner in the late 1960's and carried original paint so there is no question about the authenticity of the original paint on this car. They used the car extensively around towns and for parades maintaining it as needed until the owners death within the last year. I am selling the car as a result.

This is a largely original car that has some body rust but a very solid original frame. The rust is confined to the drivers side fenders (front and rear) and for some reason did not impact the passenger side to any real extent. It could be driven as is but I would think a restoration of some sort is in order. According to the data plate, the car was ordered with a special code PPP Matador Red paint. The current owners acquired the car from the original owner and it had not been repainted ever to the best of their knowledge. I state with strong confidence that this car is one of only a hand full of Matador red cars from the factory.

The exterior is original and complete. The sheet metal is original throughout and has rust areas that can clearly be seen in the pictures mostly on the drivers side. The fenders can be repaired. The chrome and trim is entirely complete with the exception of the two front fender 'eyebrows' that are missing. Aside from those two items, the trim is complete. The trim around the windows and vent windows is remarkably good with NO bubbling or pitting what-so-ever. Those parts are hugely expensive once pitted to repair. The bumpers are straight with no dents or damage anywhere. The front grill is also good to go as is with no damage whatsoever. The paint is average with chips throughout. There are no dents and serious damage anywhere. The rocker panels are original and sound. The glass is all original and the front windshield has a crack in it.

Inside the car are good signs of care-taking by the long-term ownership. The seats were recovered in vinyl but the original leather remains underneath. To protect the floors, they put down carpet scraps and the effort succeeded as the floors are excellent and rust free. The dash instrumentation is all there and works well. The odometer shows a hair over 99K miles and based on everything I can see, I can't disprove that reading. Included in the rather long option list are the upgraded town and country (seven button) radio, power seats, power windows and power steering and brakes. About the most interesting option is the factory speed control which is still in place. It is the dial just under the factory clock (see pictures). I had never seen speed control on an imperial before.

The top components are 100% complete. The top is original (or a very very old replacement) and has obvious issues (the tear on the passenger side being the most visible and serious). All of the top framework is excellent original and has been lubricated just this week to allow the top to be put up and down manually. There is a boot as well that fits (it was on the car as we pulled it out of the garage) but I suspect it is NOT original to the car.

Underneath the car is the solid and rust free original frame. The tires have good tread but I have no idea how old they are. The brakes work but have NOT been serviced. I just put fresh fuel in the car and the car starts, runs and yard drives. The trunk is in good order as well with a solid floor and extra parts. The aircleaner is with the car but off. I have a photo of it. it is the correct '58 only air cleaner.

There are at least two (maybe three..I am not sure) extra correct hub caps with the car.

1958's are the most sought after of the Imperials because A) they are scarce to begin with and B) they are the last of the big Hemi equipped cars. Here is a chance to acquire one with unquestioned provenance, a very rare factory ordered model and ready for a ground-up restoration having freshly been pulled from the garage where it has resided for the last 40+ years. As always, I can be reached by clicking the contact seller link or by calling me at 860-883-3998.

Many thanks and good luck.

Looking at the 'plumbing', going to the oil filler cap, this car may well have been registered in CA around 1970,
when the state mandated a crude sort of PCV system in all(??) cars---in the FWDLK'ers, for certain.

That pollution system mandate was only in force for a couple-few years, but, you'll see cars that still have their
PCV hoses/plumbing installed on them....

This car has been discussed here : http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=33300
If I remember correctly, the seller was asking around 50,000 ...

(this other thread said the reserve was met, at 30,300 ... No sale then?).

I have one of those CA cars with a destroyed valve cover...

The filler cap on this convert looks like a late 60's piece that simply routes back to the air breather. It was probably missing the original cap and this is what someone had laying around.

I have called seller, he is looking for around $40,000, I don't think it's going to that far in this condition.
