Elite Veteran Posts: 750 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: kansas city, mo. | it's the original motor for sure, poly for sure not hemi. still has the a/c intact, the breather assembly. the only thing missing from what i know about 58 windsors, are the little badges that attach to the tiny insert within the trim spears on the rear quarters and the hubcaps. the car may be sold to a fellow member here. i backed out of buying this one myself. you know, other things(cars) come up! mike in k.c.

Elite Veteran Posts: 750 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: kansas city, mo. | terry, the only plymmie 61 is a plain jane wagon and it is pretty toasty! not much left. i think there is a passenger headlight bezel but i can't swear to it. i think i checked on it for another member previously. i never took any pics of the 61. you're right, getting in and out of some of these cars and getting in a position to pull stuff from under a dash is a bit of a nightmare. i look at this yard literally like a kid in a candy store or a toys-r-us! funt times for sure!

Member Posts: 13 | hey thanks mike good on you for thinking about it. I'm abit out of town anyway if you have heard of New Zealand thats where I'm at. I got this 61 coupe out of ohio it sort of got picked over on the way out, hence the clock missing out of the dash, but hey s**t does happen. I've got a bad fitting drivers door, everything looks great except for the top hinge being just a little bent and / or just simply the wrong one as well. anydoors laying around with a hinge to suit my coupe? I'm not familiar with parts that interchange. Also does the coupe have different wind screen stainless compared to the 4 door sedan, maybe because the roof lines are completely different perhapes? Over here we use to have those graveyards for old chev's an ford's but they are also gone, I'd love to come over if someone had a tour circuit organised....global graveyards.com I bags the IT rights straight away. haha cheers, Terry

Expert Posts: 1490 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Florida | Well, the Windsor is going to excellent use - I'm using the body from the firewall back and interior parts for my cut-up '58 Saratoga four-door hardtop. My buddy is using all the front sheetmetal and the entire chassis to replace a rotten one on his '58 DeSoto Firesweep. There will be VERY little left over, and it will be breathing life into two cars. Even my buddy said that he is satisified that we will consuming the parts on this car nearly 100%. Otherwise, his & my car would be further away from a usable vehicle, and neither is being parted out. The Windsor is weeks away from being crushed, since the yard is already sold, and vehicles are disappearing completely by the day. Overall, a better end to this car than being crushed, melted down and remade into a cheap Chinese tool set . . . Edited by Chopper John 2008-03-29 9:03 PM

A bit surprised that it's mentioned there's a Poly in it, I thought they weren't used in Chryslers. I know it's not the Poly as in 301/313/318 but a 'converted Hemi', but all the same, this is the first time I've seen one mentioned in relation to a Chrysler.

Expert Posts: 1490 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Florida | It's a different Poly - what was in the '55 thru '58 lower-line Chryslers was a cheaper version of the 331 & 354 Hemi - the heads only required one rocker shaft per head, and were lighter in weight and simpler to cast, and therefore, cheaper. It was a totally different engine than the 318 Poly, and a whisker away from the Hemi. The 354 Poly in my '57 Saratoga is rated at 295 HP with a stick four barrel carburetor, so it was no slouch.

Expert Posts: 1490 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Florida | Thanks, ilikedodge Mike! The father & son yanked the Windsor up in the air, I backed my rented trailer underneath it, and they lowered it down onto it - then they pushed the Windsor the rest of the way onto the trailer. I wish I could have had a 2-3 car trailer - there were a few other cars I would have taken if I had the room! I got home safely with the Windsor in tow on a trailer behind the Penske truck I rented in Platte City, MO, just 10 minutes from the airport. It was 1528 miles one-way back to Florida, at an average speed of 61 MPH, all at 8-9 MPG of unleaded gas, priced from $3.33/gallon to $3.59/gallon. The lady at the Penske truck rental agency was really helpful. I had made all my reservations online (www.penske.com) in advance - there's no other way - and everything went very smoothly. Even the Southwest one-way flight from West Palm Beach, FL, to Kansas City, MO at $89 was trouble-free. The owner of the yard told me that the deal to sell the yard has not yet gone through, and he's been on the side of the potential buyer to keep the yard as an operating wrecking yard, instead of his grandfathered zoning expiring once the yard is sold - and the yard has plenty of good parts cars left. If the potential new owner does not get to keep the zoning unchanged if the sale goes through, the cars will likely be crushed. The owner is ready to retire after operating the yard for 47 years. I took over 70 pictures of the cars in the yard, and will post a bunch when I get the chance. And you were 100% in your PM to me, Mike - the Windsor definitely was one of the better cars in the yard! In some of the low-lying areas, it was quite obvious that the cars had been submerged, but most were old wrecks and cars that had only seen the end of their useful life. And, yes! I had my tall sh*tkickers on walking through the yard, so my feet remained dry - my boots nearly were pulled off a few times from the suction of the muddy grounds. Did the owner realize that there were multiple creeks and streams running right through the center of his property when he started this yard? I don't know. Sorry, alwndup, I didn't get your message before I left. I'll look to see if I have any pics of that Dodge - I recall a finned post-1960 finned wagon that was missing its front-end sheetmetal - that may have been the wagon that you're asking about. Like I said, I'll get some pics posted ASAP.

Expert Posts: 1490 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Florida | Mike, I think you have a little more time - the old man is giving hell to the zoning board, and his goal is to allow the potential new owner to keep the yard operating as it is. The Dodge didn't look bad - but I had my eye on that power swivel seat in the 60 Imperial - but the yard owner said the whole car had been sold to Imperial Services in North(?)Dakota. He had already sold them five other Imperials. I am happy with the Windsor - I always expect a car that I have purchased sight-unseen to be significantly worse than what is shown in pictures, and I adjust my buying price accordingly. I think this car was worth the $700 paid - some parts were worse than expected (rear quarters) and other parts better than expected (roof, front fenders, rocker panels). I am still taking inventory of its condition, but don't expect any surprises. The frame is solid, probably much more solid than many of the cars there. I'd love to pick up a few dozen of his cars & open my own yard!

I just had to include that partly-submerged 1959 Buick sedan, and the unfortunate Alfa Spider with the 6" diameter tree growing through its floorboards and between the steering wheel and dashboard. And yes, that is lichen growing on my car, along with some moss. It came off in the self-service car wash. Alwndup, I looked through all my pictures and did not find a 1961 Dodge, unless it's that car I included first in the above group - I think that's a 1960.

Elite Veteran Posts: 750 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: kansas city, mo. | the wagon in the first pic is a 61. i grabbed the side rear stainless from it a few weeks back. i see mike on the cat helpin' you out. that 57 2dht belvy has been sold to a dude that bought my old rusty 57 for about 2 years now. he paid for it and jim had mike move it to where it is now and he never showed up to pick it up. that car was crunched by the cat several years ago when they moved it to where it used to sit before they dragged it to where it sits now. i grabbed a bunch of parts off it a few years back too. that place is a blast! i go when ever i can. i hope it stays for ever, but i'm scared it is gonna get crushed out. i do hope jim gets something worked out to where it stays a reasonably inexpensive place to buy cars and parts. thanks for posting more pics, mike in k.c.

Elite Veteran Posts: 750 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: kansas city, mo. | john, the deal to sell the cars and the yard fell thru however, jim decided to bring in a crusher and started crushing soon after the deal fell thru with the would be buyer. he still has some cars as to what and how many are left remains to be seen. when i last spoke with him he said he had crushed about 150 cars! i know the 59 dodge i bought is still there, and he promised to hold onto the last 58 plymouth 2dht for me until i could come and get it which looks to be in a week or two. i kinda think he made the would be buyer too good of a deal and decided to cash it out on his own terms. sad, but i guess he just decided it was time. he told me that business was way down any way. i got to give him a call to touch base with him and i'll report back with a mopar head count, mike in k.c.

Many usable parts are going to be lost with the crushing of these cars. I guess it's a fantasy to think that a yard like that will go on forever without change. It's too bad that a few more can't be saved -maybe a few more members here will look over the pics in this thread and try to get over there.

Expert Posts: 1490 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Florida | Mike - does Van's still have some of those F#rd truck cabs around? How about that poor Alfa Romeo with the tree growin' up through it? There must have been a half-dozen flathead F#rd engines laying around there. Have you been able to pick up the car you wanted originally? The '58 Chrysler Windsor I picked up has yielded a boatload of good parts - The A/C setup is going on my '58 coupe, lots of 4-door-hardtop-only parts are set aside for my '57 Saratoga chopped-off-top hardtop, and the rest is going north to Tennessee in two weekends to help get TNLOWRIDER's '58 DeSoto Firesweep back on the road - the frame, decklid and front fenders on his car are toast, and the Windsor does offer decent parts in those areas. I did look over the Windsor thoroughly after I got it home. With the extensive floor rust that crept up to the dashboard and around to the inner rocker panels, and the fact water was rushing out somewhere from the rear of the engine when I tried filling the radiator, and all four wheels were frozen solid, I expect that its fate would not have ever been to be restored itself. I will see if I can post some pics of what it looks like once I get it on the trailer to bring it to tnlowrider. The pics will be shocking! The car is quite disassembled, but has given up its existence to eventually make three other cars roadworthy.
