Well, YESTERDAY, the Doubletree reservation
was a confuser-NO-go; TODAY, all systems are GO !!

So, here's the deal (too-bad, for the non-List
Forwardlookers) : call 1-800-222-8733, and
ask for a CITY VIEW, HIGH-FLOOR.

There are 18 floors in the Doubletree, but "non-suite" rooms, on the
top-floor are "LIMITED".

a non-smoking 2-person king-or-twin-beds will cost ONLY $89.00/nite,
(plus tax)---quite a deal, compared to other "events" lodging, and no
"multi-day-room-requirements".

The old-man who will be car-avaning to T-town, (59 NY'er 2-dr) with the
wifey et moi will 'put' the room-charges on his AARP account, for a
further savings...

The Doubletee will NOT 'bill' you, til check-in, and you've got a 24-hr
cancellation-deadline, so you have NOTHING to lose, by securing a room
reservation.

My 'party' (literally) will arrive on TUES 6/12 & I precautionarily
reserved, thru SAT 6/16.

You WILL get an 8-digit Reservation Number.

The direct-number for the Hotel is 918-587-8000 , & its address is 616
W. 7th Street.

Do you HAVE to be in Tulsa, next year---? NAHHHH, there are LOTS of
brand-new buried 1957 Plymouth Belvederes, all-OVER the world!

You can always go to the un-earthing of the NEXT one !

Tell your friends (after you make YOUR reservations--LOLOL) !

...SORT-of ! [see attachment, below]

The FWDLK website had originally posted the story of the "Buried
Plymouth", on its Home page.

The FWDLK archives are available/located :
(forwardlook.net/archived-discussion/articles and at:
forwardlook.net/archived-exhaustpipe/articles

The archives go back to 1999.

I'm sending (hopefully) the General Discussion "archives" main-page
(which make for great reading)...

If you (bother to) check the 1999 threads, you'll find that on 12/23/99,
and thereafter, on different threads, the Buried Plymouth begins to be
discussed.

That's SIX.5 years ago!

BTW, thanx to my business being 'slow' today, I was able to read the
"earliest" archives, & discovered, therein, that the issue-date, of the
Life Magazine article, on the Buried Plymouth is : 7/1/57.

Y'all should 'record' that date, for-when you might have the opportunity
to look @ a stack of "Life's", @ a thrift/antique shop, or @ a swap
meet.

Finally (I told you it was slow @ work, today!) I contacted Hemmings
Classic Cars and Motor Trend Classic, & told 'them' about the Buried
Plymmie, (apparently for the 'first-time'!!!)
and they shall, reportedly, contact the Oklahoma Centennial Committee
and/or Tulsa C of C, about arranging to "cover" the big-event.

That got me to thinking (instead of working...)
that our English (I'm thinking "American Classic" magazine) and Swedish
(lotsa American-car mags, "there") & French (I know there's @ least one
Am-car mag) List Members should consider contacting "their" contries'
car-mags, & see if THEY would like to cross-the-pond, & cover the
festivities!!!!!

I'll contact the FWDLK's General Discussion
'board', manana, & invite them to the Doubletree, ( can you imagine a
hotel "completely" taken-over by Forwardlooking people, annd
CARS??--fortunately, there is a LOT of time, to "fill" the place, before
the General-Public starts trying to 'book' reservations) & ask them to
try to contact their
overseas magazines, too .

Got an email from Tom Mitchell, who said that Doubletree is "upped"
thieir nitely rate to $119.00 & no AARP discount.

Nuts.

Called D-T, bAND, to make a Looong story: less, I am PERSONALLY
arranging with the Hilton (parent) company, to have 'blocks' of
special-room rates be available (hopefully @ $89.00/nite [I'm not
greedy] and w/AARP).

This does/will NOT officially involve the FWDLK, but the Hilton sez
that they CAN set aside small-blocks (i.e.: 10-@-a-time) of rooms, @
special rates, where each person makes his own reservation, & PAYS for
it.

I told the nice lady that EYE thought that, over the coming year, that @
least 200 rooms would be 'reserved' for Forwardlooking people.

The deal is still in-the-works, but may be consumated (again: 10-room
blocks, so Hilton is able to cancel it, @ their discression, "whenever"
they feel like it!) later today.

you will receive a special reservation-number, & event "name", to
reference.

If I read this right, there's rooms at the "double Tree" and also at the "Hilton". Who's staying where? As it's been mentioned before, I think it'd be neat to have our forward look cars lined up in the parking lot. So I want to be sure we stay in a place where it's possible, and where the cars will be relatively safe.

Thanks,

-BV

Alright: I had a follow-up conversation with Ms. Angela Mayhue, @ the
D-T, Tulsa, & will be 'Forwarding' to her, today, our little contract,
where WE have agreed that the D-T WILL
offer group-discounts to "us" @ $89.00/nite, for the period 6/ 12 - 17
/07, but, unfortunately with NO AARP discount available --sorry,
old-timers!
The contract will be in force as long/until we continue filling the
place, in 10-room "blocks".

I have TUES-SAT reserved, so that counts as 5-of-10, right there. I know
of at least two Mail-Listers who had initially booked the $89.00
rate (before some bright-boy decided to hike the prices, to
$119.00/nite). The D-T will check their individual-reservations, for
6/12-17/07, & give "us" block-credit for those room-dates.

NOW, (just to make this mo-inneresting) the DT says :"sure, we's got us
417 rooms, here, BUTTT, 152 rooms are ALREADY contractually
'sold', to tour groups, etc..."

So, that "only" leaves us (calculator, please..)
up to 265 rooms, for the 'Entire-World', to book, each nite!

To get the Super-Duper- Room- Rate, you MUST reference the code-word :
"FORWARDLOOK" (shouldn't be too hard, to remamber), when you call (ONLY
this number, NOT the actual hotel) which is the DT's "national
reservations" number : 1-800-222-8733.

Finally, ( & this is for the multitudinous FWDLK
website's General-Discussion chatroom's
readers), the D-T is the CLOSEST facility, to the Tulsa County
Courthouse.

If anyone has ever attended a 'Big-Event', he will know that PROXIMITY
to the venue is of critical importance, for logistics, and for social
interaction.

I anticipate , due in part to Tulsa's seemingly indifferent
"organizational" attitude, to date, that there might be considerable
confusion (think 3 Stooges Convention) regarding "Virgil's"
unearthment proceedings, and/or for traffic/crowd control, etcetcetc.

It might be necessary, e.g., to sit on bleachers, all nite, to hold
those good-seats, unless the Tulsarama Committee takes my suggestion,
that they offer "Admission Packages", which would include Reserved
Seating &/or Car Parade bookings (limited to , maybe, 50-100 cars),
Goodie Bags, Limited-Edition mementoes, etc.).

My point is : cars of-a-fin, should park-together.

Once you are "in" town, The D-T provides 'Security-provided' enclosed
parking structure, (which I know MY car will appreciate, as he sun-burns
easily). You can use the hotel as a base-of-operations, to cruise-
around, and to socialize-with, all nite (as has been known to occur @
Chrysler car-meets), AND, you can WALK to/from "VIRGIL's" un-earthing
proceedings!

So, for me, anyway, the choice of the D-T is a no-brainer.

And, there are ONLY 265 nitely-rooms available.

Try to get there on TUES 6/12, as 6/13 will be for sight-seeing, & THUR
6/14 should be INSANITY (Okie-style). And, THEN, there's Virgil's
'Birthday' party!!!

DO NOT FORGET to ask for "CITY VIEW, HIGH FLOOR" (as high-up, as
possible).

See you there (Tulsa's downtown SHOULD resemble a Forwardlooking version
of "American Graffitti".)

But, HEY, if the location, or 'dates' are inconvenient to you, you can
always 'wait', and go to the NEXT un-earthment of a brand-new Buried
Forward-looking MoPar.

Does anyone here have contact with the Imperial Club?

Someone, there, had had an interview with Virgil Exner's son.

I'm wondering if the Imp Club could contact Jr. and invite him to the
Tulsa party?

Hope he doesn't demand Appearance-Money.

So far, neither Hemmings Classic Cars, Motor Trend Classic, nor My
Classic Car (notice a
commonality, there?) had known about the Big Event; all are seriously
interested in covering it, but event-scheduling/programming meetings for
the coming-year are held around November, each year.

Hey A loon can! Thanks for all your effort in getting things put together here. A couple months ago we started checking out motels within walking distance to the Courthouse, and found the Doubletree. But at that time they would not make reservations that far ahead. Today my wife used the toll free number that you listed and made our reservations there. When she told them we were with the FORWARDLOOK group, we got the $89 rate. Still pretty high dollar for our budget , but what the hay--we haven't had a vacation in years. Difficult to choose between there and Stroud, probably will cruise down there and meet Dave and the gang ..............................5%..............

OK. Correction!
NEIL VEDDER over on the FwdLk MAILING LIST portion of the Forwardlook Site, has been EMAILING me what information (FOOTWORK) HE has been doing.
Seems he has been researching the 'buried Plymouth' a LOT longer than what I/Ray Bell/Dave Ball, has been doing.
ALL I have been doing lately is, taking part of Neil's information he has sent me, and POSTED it on OUR WEB site.
I have done NOTHING other than POST Neil's information in this site.
ALL of the credit goes to him, NOT me.

Hope you (& others!) drive thru Bishop, cause on SAT or SUN, I'll drive
4 hrs to Ron Mog's home, in Apple Valley, & on MON drive 7-8 hrs to
Albuqerque, & then, on TUES drive another 7-8 hrs, on to T-Town.

Hopefully, Alumcan (who LURKS here--Rick, I can hear you, breathing!!)
might "paste/post" this, to a (NEW??) "Caravaning" thread, so that
others (Westerners, & NorWesters!) might meet, @ Victorville, @ say,
the Route 66 Museum, on D Street (right "off of " the Route 15 exit) @
a certain time (like 7:30 AM) to join up with any other car-avans, who
might have reached that area. "Cheap" gas is right there, too...

Victorville is right "on" US highway 395, which is a logical, scenic
route, for anyone coming down, from the PacWest.

The Route 15 D Street exit is within about 30 miles of Route 40, which
will take us-all, staright-to T-Town.

So, there could be quite a few cars forming-up, in Victorville...

Next stop would be...???

Was cruisin the Mailing List Archives, again (don't tell my boss) &
discovered, that on
1/07/05, Dave Stragand, and Edward Petrus
had separately spoken with Virgil Exner, JR, about his possibly
attending the 2005 Carlisle
'show', regarding his interest in presenting a
dissertation, on his/his father's experiences in designing (our) cars.
JR had reportedly designed the XNR 2-seater concept car, around 1961
(IIRC????), [ AND, IIRC (ii), the XNR-car may have been stolen by Iraq
soldiers, from Kuwait, in 1991, & its whereabouts is unknown???) ] .

According to the 1/07/05 post, JR was not certain if his personal
schedule could accomodate the Carlisle date, altho Dave stated that the
FWDLK 'site' may have been willing to cover JR & his wife's travel
expenses, to Carlisle.

I couldn't find any "outcome", to Dave's 'invite',
but, "NOW", could it be possible for someone, who knows JR, to contact
him, & invite him to TULSA?

I'm sure we could 'reserve' a meeting room, @ the Doubletree, for the
'talk/presentation', AND, if necessary to cover JR's travel expenses,
I'll bet we could charge an admission fee, too.

The best date/time for the presentation would be on THUR 6/14/07, at
about 7PM (e.g.) .

Reportedly, the National Plymouth Club is planning to stay @ the
Doubletree, but, that is only 'hear-say', to me.

WELL, can anyone (here?) contact Mr Exner
& invite him, to "speak" @ Tulsa?

Before I go and make my reservations I want to get my dates right. The unearthing is Friday June, 15 right? What, if any events do we have planned and which days will they be held. Right now I am thinking I will need a room Wednesday-Saturday night. That leaves me with a whole day before and after the event. This should be sufficient right?

I tried to make my reservations following the instructions from the email posted above. After I entered "FOR" in the group field and clicked entered it said "Please note that the group rate you requested is unavailable. Available rates are displayed below."

Do we have a "group rate" or is the "for" code just supposed to identify us from the rest of the people staying. Are they going to try and get us all rooms close to each other. Or are they going to get "group rate" set up later?

Should I just go ahead and reserve the rooms at the 119.99 per night rate?

hey, if yer driving in from vegas, come on to stroud! cheaper and better, i say!

for those flying in from overseas, tulsa obviously makes more sense. however, stroud will be a great cruise! besides, it's so much easier to find other people in a small town. no places to "get lost!"

Too bad my message-titles don't come thru!

Had another very nice conversation with Ms. Mayhue, @ the D-T, today, after receiving contact , from a FWDLK'er, that
his reservation-extension had been 'denied', due to our first (computerized) "group-room-rate-booking" having been FULLY
filled!!!.

Ms. Mahue has granted us another group-room-rate-booking "block", so, we are able to continue to book the time period 6/12-18/07 @ the $89.00/nite rate, and, that rate pertains to either a 2-bed room, or a 1-bed room.

As I have written, previously, I believe that anyone venturing to Tulsa, next year, should consider arriving on TUES 6/12/07,
in order to enjoy the venue as fully, as possible. (It's a long-way to go, just to turn-around!) .

Any problems or questions should be directed to Ms. Angela Mayhue, @ 1-918-587-8000, or @ angela_mayhue@hilton.com

Reservations can also be made via the internet : www.tulsadowntown.doubletree.com or @ parent-company
Hilton Hotels national reservation number : 1-800-445-8667.

As a side-note, when I was speaking w/Ms. Mayhue, today, I happened to mention that some FWDLK'ers had been
planning on staying in Stroud.

Ms Mayhue (metaphorically) gasped, & said that Stroud was, now, a sort of grim Ghost-Town, as a tornado
ripped through that town, "about 5 years ago", and destroyed the town's shopping mall, which HAD been, according to Ms. Mayhue, a "hopping place"! The mall was reportedly never rebuilt, and, Ms. Mayhue says, she avoids travelling thru
there, anymore, because the place is so depressing.

That's what she said.

Of course, nobody's gonna confuse Tulsa, with Dallas......but, I'm just hoping to find its appearance to be somewhat like
"Bakersfield, CA", in the movie American Graffiti !

I'll be at the Doubletree also. Just booked from the 13th until the 16th. Approximately a 1200 mile drive from my home in my 1958 Fury. This trip will add a couple more states to the 15 and Canada that I have already DRIVEN this car through. See you folks there.

Thanks Neil,

I took it upon myself to email Angela (the lady you have been in contact)
and asked her some questions. But I just want to say thanks for posting
all of that information. My club members want to go, but nobody really had
stepped up yet to actually go through the motions of getting rooms. I've
been to really big events (like the Harley 100th anniversary party) and I
know what they are like, so I've been pushing them and decided to "take the
reins" and take care of things myself. But I couldn't have done it without
all of the useful information you have made available over at FL (which I
don't spend enough time at!).

Thanks again!

mike, i'm disappointed! i hope it wasn't because of the disparaging comments of a competing hotel operator.

granted, if you want to see shopping, museums, or theaters, go to tulsa. however, if you want to see each other, come to stroud.

while they warn you about how "depressing" stroud is, i will be the first to tell you that three years ago, it was. however, we have finally started to turn the corner. yes, we lost 800 jobs overnight, including the hospital, the mall (which was the tax base for city hall), and sigma trucking. that's a real body blow for a small town. then, just as we started to get some new prospects, 9/11 happened. THAT'S what made things depressing, because you sure can't grow a small town economy in a national recession! also, the tornado was OVER SEVEN YEARS AGO.

however, we got the hospital rebuilt (newest and finest around!), the government forgave our loan on the new water system (new treatment plant and lines), we opened an industrial park and got a new tenant, and have attracted a growing number of new businesses within the last 2 1/2 years. we also have a town where my best friend sleeps with the front screen door opened all night, and where many folks (like me) leave the keys in the car.

now let me tell you about downtown tulsa. better yet, let me tell you to ask the doubletree lady about downtown tulsa. ask her about the "vision 2025" projects and how they are doing. ask her why it was even necessary to pass the projects at election. ask her how much time SHE spends downtown when she isn't at work. i don't want to badmouth tulsa, but i am absolutely floored at what i've read here. yes, tulsa has many wonderful attractions, and the doubletree is a very nice hotel. however, tulsa has all the problems ANY big city has.

in stroud, we have a new city manager, and a new city council who took office 15 months ago. we have a beautiful city lake with great fishing, camping, picnicking and water skiing (bring your boat!) , a beautiful city park, wonderful new elementary school, many good places to eat, the finest library in the county and of any rural town in the state, TWO fitness centers, including physical and massage therapy, beauty shops, route 66 curiosities, honest mechanics who can actually fix your car at a cheap price, friendly people, a slow pace, AND NO TRAFFIC.

no, we do not have the lights of gay paree. however, stroud ("the midway city") has been a traveler's place to stop, rest, eat, and gas up, ever since the introduction of the automobile. if you like "radiator springs", well this is it! come to the rock cafe and meet dawn, the actual inspiration for the character sally carrera in the movie "cars"!

didn't mean to rant, but "ghost town", "depressing", and "haven't been back" really pisses me off. i've always been honest about our condition here, and we are well up to the task of accommodating this group. if you want to do the city thing, are flying in, or just are not comfortable in a rural setting, i understand. however, consider the source. i won't make a dime off of this, but the downtown doubletree will.

Well I got the room reserved. 500 bones.... But I am sure it will be well worth it. The only thing I would like to change is to get two beds in the room instead of 1 king. I put it in my preference so maybe they will change it.

As far as the physical appearance of (downtown) Tulsa, I'm only hoping that it resembles "Bakersfield, CA, in the movie Amercan Graffitti!

Altho I anticipate that the Doubletree will constitute its own car show/car meet venue, I do intend to cruise around the Town, and visit the area, about seven miles away, that has dining/shopping facilities.facilities.

I re-contacted the Doubletree, and have confirmed that Tulsa is NOT a "dry" town, and that ther bar closing-time is 2 A.M.

There are "State Stores" that sell only-alcohol (like, in Ohio, where I'm-from), and they close @ 9 P.M. .

The Doubletree has a Lobby-bar (hoo-rah), a formal restaurant, a coffee shop, and room-service.

It will be FUN, not having any agenda/schedule, for TUES & WED nites, as THUR will be madness, all day long.

Ah, Tulsa : "The Week of Living Dangerously"

all strong beer and liquor must be sold in liquor stores. they are open from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., monday thru saturday, ONLY. this is STATEWIDE. also, liquor stores may also sell wine. stroud has two liquor stores. wine may also be sold at wineries. stroud presently has two award-winning wineries, with two others within a 15 minute radius. wine is considered an agricultural product and may be purchased at wineries on sunday. tulsa does not have any wineries that i am aware of, but stone bluff winery is located in haskell. liquor store products may not be refrigerated. that means hot beer at the liquor stores.

cold beer not exceeding 3.2% alcohol by weight may be purchased at grocery stores, gas stations, etc. in other words, just about anyplace except liquor stores. this is statewide. however, it cannot be purchased from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.

alcholic beverages may be served by the drink at restaurants and taverns, depending upon the type of license. beer bars are statewide. tulsa, oklahoma city, and all points in between are now "wet", meaning you can get a drink with your meal. the type of license depends on the restaurant. for instance, you can have suds with your hamburger at the rock cafe. however, they don't serve whiskey.

confused now?

actually, it's getting more and more liberal all the time. however, there are certain forces who fight against change. for instance, liquor stores used to be open until 10:00 and beer was available 24/7, but the "dries" took out their revenge when liquor by the drink got passed.

Hi, all; I believe that we've been granted our third room-block-booking, at the Doubletree.

If you make your reservation thru the national reservation number (1-800-222-8733) you should reference the 3-digit "Forwardlook" code :"FOR", to get the confuser to recognize our special $89.00/nite room rate , for JUN 12-18.

Reservations can also be made, directly, @ the hotel, @ 1-918-587-8000.

The hotel will have car-washing facilities available in their "rear lot"; should be a popular hang-out, ('cept, maybe, for their Lobby Bar.)

And, ANOTHER thing: I have it on GOOD authority, that the video, appearing on the REC ROOM's chatboard (see :"I wont drive MY fins, here", or whatever)
does NOT depict Tulsa (rush-hour?) traffic!!!

I made the reservatiion today at DoubleTree Hotels, June 13-16th, $89 per night, with the knowledge that it can be cancelled with a 24 hour advance notice, if the "Stroud option" becomes the hangout. Never spent much time in Tulsa, except maybe an 8 second flyover!

I am not sure I want to drive the Firedome to Tulsa. It's a long haul from L.A., probably a cooler night drive, but I want to get it there, maybe trailer it, then do a cruise with the Mopar crew.

LookingForward to it all!

As an addendum to my suggestion, that people try to arrive as early in the week, as possible, and, especially for people who will be spending at least one travel-nite on-the-road, enroute to Tulsa, this past weekend I drove my car 600 miles to/from a SoCal car show. I spent the nite at a MoPar-man's
house which has a 'full-service' garage, (Alumcan might be able to 'post' some pics of his cars/parts, in the General Discussion threads, below) . The man is very mechanically proficient , and he was able to service/adjust some mechanical glitches that had arisen, during the trip. Because of his 'work', I am having, today, the starter & generator be disassembled and serviced/overhauled, as necessary, even though they both appear to be operating satisfactorily.

In fact, my dearly-beloved AC Delco battery.... (purchased in 1987!!!, when my correct tar-top battery over-charged and puked acid , enroute to the 1987 Burbank WPC National Meet. I removed its stick-on labels, so that it looks like an unassuming, black, flat-top generic battery)....which CONTINUES to provide trouble-free service, is going to be replaced sometime soon, because my electrical-shop sez that it COULD fail, at any time.

So, my message, here, is that you-all have PLENTY of time, beginning-NOW, to have your cars be fully checked-out/repaired prior to your heading out, to Tulsa.

A good way to begin your car's efficiency check-up, is to road-test it on a multi-hour trip, at sustained highway speeds. Spend the night somewhere, and return home the next day.

We can assemble a "list" of essential spare parts, but I am "including" an extra water pump, fuel pump, belts, an upper radiator hose, voltage regulator, distributor cap, ballast resistor, and sundry parts/tools---I've got E.I., but points/condensor are critical spares.

If you can get to/from Tulsa, in one day, you are, obviously not risking a major 'stranding', on the road.

However, by planning to arrive EARLY in the week, you are allowing yourself extra-time to have necessary repairs be made, on-the-road, and/or in Tulsa, and still, maybe be able to enjoy the proceedings, once you get there!

Also, by getting there 'early', you can have more time to relax and socialize with the new friends that you WILL meet there!

Has everything been said, by now, about why we all should make a Pilgrimage to Tulsa, why we should arrive as EARLY as possible, that week, and where we should reside, once we get there (yes; huh) ??

It would be nice if "Tulsa" would inform us, as to the week's festivities....I'm aware that there is supposed to be a 50's dance, on SAT.

My Dodge & my friend's 59 Ny'er are gonna feel out-numbered, by the PLY Owners Club, @ the Doubletree, but, hey! It's THEIR party !!
