Hey all- Continuing the saga of fitting a 360 into my original poly 318 dumptruck....... I got a 318 flywheel, and modified it per the drawings someone emailed me...... but it was a 130 tooth, and my bell is for a 143 tooth......so needless to say, the starter didn't mesh. Got another 318 flywheel, nice shape- it's the larger 143 tooth. Starter meshes fine. I modified it to 360 specs re: the drawings...... Got it installed today, and fired up the engine for the first time. There is a vibration. Can anyone tell me why ???? Any ideas what to do to rectify the problem ???? I followed the plans to a tee- 3 holes to the right depth, exactly to the specs of the layout..... I don't get it.

10.5/11........130/143.......internal/external
Dang mopars anyway !!!!!

That 360 flywheel is for an external balance engine only...(360 only)...The mods you made may not have worked, because short of gettin' the whole motor rebalanced, I don't know of any way to get rid of it other than runnin' the correct 360 flywheel.....I have been lookin' for an external balance flywheel for a 360 for some time now, and can't find one (car).. Summit racing and Jeg's sells the big flywheel 11" or the 10 1/2" both will take either clutch....Dual mounting patterns.....Dual teeth patterns.
Rather expensive though...I think the last time I looked, They were around $400.00....
I have tried that Mopar performance "Balancing trick(Drilling holes), with no success...
Hope this helps

You could call Mopar Performance and tell them the year of the 360, and see if they got your flywheel....

Or.......You could just put a 318 in it and be done with it....

I haven't followed all you've done, but a 318 is internally balanced and a 360 is externally ballanced. Automatic 360's have weights welded to the torque converter to balance. I am not familiar with a manual 360 setup, but I would think there would be a similiar arrangement with the flywheel.

....as far as I've seen it's the opposite for auto 360's. The flex plate has a large hole cut out. The manual 360 flywheel is supposed to be 19-something inch-ounces out of balance, and you supposidly accomplish this by drilling 3 holes .66 inches deep at specific locations on the flywheel.

By the looks of your post, you got the 143 tooth down as external....You may have "Unbalanced" the flywheel....
You say that the wheels are all "318", You might have gotten a 360 11" by mistake, and unbalanced it....
I know that the 360 11" flywheels(truck), are more common than the 10 1/2"(car)...

BTW....THAT MOPAR PERFORMANCE TRICK DOESN'T WORK!!!

I was under the impression that any 360 flywheel will work on any 360 engine.......... so they are not factory matched..... ...though that still doesn't fix my dilema. The engine WAS an automatic in the motorhome, but my truck is standard. Fortunatley the crank was drilled for the pilot bushing, which I've installed. Could the harmonic balancer be different between a 360 auto / standard ? I'm not sure.......

.....I think it is obvious that it was not originally a 360 flywheel, as they should already have the 3 holes present in the rear, if I'm understanding all that I've read online.

You gotta watch those motorhome engines!!!!!!!!!!!
That may have been a 318--360---or something else....I have run into this with 440's.....

Chysler did some stupi SH*T on the assy. line! I've seen 440 CAST crank external balance motors, INTERNALLY balanced with the cast balancer!!!!! AND FLEXPLATE for cast external balance...

So lookin' at it, you would think that it is external balance....Get into the oil pan though, it's got FORGED steel crank, and been INTERNALLY balanced......

....well I thought I looked up the numbers once, and I was TOLD it was a 360 (though that is never 100%) I suppose maybe I should get the original flex plate, and see if it vibrates then. Perhaps there is a dead cylinder (but I doubt it.....it runs too evenly)

fARMALL.....I THINK YOU GOT A 318 THAT WAS SUPPOSEDLY A 360...
SIMPLE WAY TO TELL, just go out to the truck, get on the ground, and I believe it's the pass. side of the block above the oil filter, look for the engine size...
Will say somethin" like 3345645 318 or 54635233 360
If not there, look on the other side...(Driver's)

Well, then the only thing I can tell you is find a KNOWN 360 11" flywheel, and don't do any drillin",put it on and see what happens. I think you said all the flywheels you got were for a 318? well, try a known 360 11"(Truck) flywheel and bolt it up...IT SHOULDN'T SHAKE THEN...
Assuming that the vibration comes in around say 1000-2000 r.p.m.'s....

Well, it's either that or just go back with a 318?

I've seen,by truck, I mean Wreckers,wood trucks,flatbeds,etc.,these things go for around $60.00 here....

In fact.......I think I got one for 360 11" truck just wiatin' for ya!!!

....well I bought the engine for 200, and the truck for 175, and I have yet to find a good used 360 143 tooth 11" flywheel anywhere !

BTW- it's not so simple as dropping in a 318- the original was a poly, and the pattern is different. I wanted to go with a 360 since I had to change everything anyway, for more power......

BTW....How did you get the 360 in, if the 318 pattern is different??

Well, I found out that I had a vacuum line that wasn't capped.....so I started it again... It still has a slight vibration, but it is not nearly as bad as it was with the vacuum leak...... I wonder if it is possible to balance it by either drilling a bit more, or adding weight, possibly in the form of some bolts (in tapped holes between the 3 counterweight holes I drilled) to stop the vibration ???????

Any other ideas ? I don't want to buy a new one.........

The three holes are one way to unbalance the flywheel but many factory 360 flywheels won't have the three holes, they have a scallop shaped section removed near the outer periphery instead.

....Another quick question..... Does anyone know the relationship between the flywheel balancing holes, and the balancer weight ? When the balancer weight is facing down, the holes in the flywheel are almost straight down as well. I'm confused, because why would you add offset weight to the balancer, but subtract offset weight from the flywheel ????? HELP !!!!

Just a guess but I think they offset the weight front/rear to prevent harmonics over the length of the crankshaft.

Here you are Farmall1938....I had to borrow a neighbor's camera, then go out in the rain, yes it's still raining here, and snap these...WE may have to talk bout' that price, as this is gettin' toooo much like work...First, I have to SCAN the pics, as my Old camera and this one I borrowed won't communicate with the computer, then Put them on an outside web site, then copy and paste......
It's gotta be worth what I originally wanted.....Let me know, before it goes to Evil-bay....
