Yeah, .... as long as self-promoting "officials" salve our non-existent anxieties and reassure us all
the through vigorous (expensive) studies that we are "safe".

Afterall, if we build the (re)build the road with extra lanes and wide shoulders, reduce the curves, etc.
...... everyone will keep "safety first" as the utmost priority, never driving faster to push the limits of the
new road, or driving recklessly in any other way.

I mean, clearly we have no wrecks on these rebuilt "safe" roads today because the more idiot-proof we
make things, the level of idiocy never rises up to meet the challenge, right ?

I have an idea ! Let's outlaw guardrails and rebuild all the roads back to 1940 standards, thereby allowing
our old friend Darwin to just run his course.

Reduction in public cost to maintain these "safe" roads ......

Forced slowing of "movement" .... possible reduction in impact equalling safer (?) driving.

Reduction in idiots through roadside attrition.

I smell a winner !

It might be shown here before, but here's a nice crop of a postcard showing a Dodge-Plymouth dealership on Route 66 in Winslow Arizona.

The full postcard with exact location and description can be found here. The Skylark is still there, although it seems to have moved to the adjacent building.

Not so common color scheme on that 1957.

Does anybody know the name of that Dodge-Plymouth dealership?

Dig the Swissair and SAS DC-8's ! ! These were the kinds of planes that inspired Exner . . . that Plymouth wants to hang out with them!

Speaking of the "graphics" on the cop cars . . . . we had a new Chief come to Burlington (Vermont USA) a few years ago, and axe the fancy graphics in favor of simple "black and white" layout with POLICE in simple block letters on the sides. The chief said at the time that the bold graphics belong on mall security cars, not city cop cruisers. 10 years on, I think (she!) was right; there is no mistaking our cop cars from a mile away!

Wayne, those Austin police cars are too kool. Zero chrome on that sedan, yet the subtle V lets you know she's packin'!

Jim, I'm sorry, but I don't know the origin of most of these photos, so I'm not sure if it was originally a postcard or photo.

And don't forget the cool Pan Am Worldport (terminal for Pan American World Airways) in the background. It is slated for demolition in the near future, but it was a great symbol of intercontinental jet travel during the early 1960's!

I always look forward to seeing this thread. The pictures are amazing!! I wish I had some to offer up for the site. I was born in 1966 and I should have been born in my dad's generation. The fins and chrome are the pinnacle of what an automobile should be. The cars are never more different than in the 50s.

I love the forward look sign! It sure is nice to see these cars in their original habitat.
It's too bad you can't go back in time.
I wonder if that dealership still exists and if anything left of the giant metal forward look sign?

yes my mom hung the clothes on the line in the back yard! they always smell better that way!

certain liquor stores still carry schlitz! rem when the bartender wore white? you could

smoke inside everywhere then! a pic of a library... all you could do was read...

they hushed you up then, like in school... no computers then... no staying up late

at night.. tv went off at 11 or midnite tops... color sets were WAY too expensive..

a few pages back was a pic of howard johnson's - founded in quincy, mass -

there are like 3 left.. in the day they were everywhere inc. the motor lodge - my dad was

a dist. mgr there for over 20 yrs. every hojos or lodge all he had to do was show a card

we didnt have to pay a dime! hows that for a fringe benefit! i still have the last card he

had exp. 1979.... he started as a waiter in 1950. moved up to dist mgr. 1966. ret. 1978.

That's a classy fire chief!

Great photo, Mr. Stanford, with two bonus Plymouths in the background (although one is pre-FL)

Here are two more, the second showing an elusive 60 ragtop, if I'm seeing correctly.

The 60 Ford was as close as Dearborn ever got to building a Forward Look car. Almost on par
with the 59 Buick. I once ran into a 61 Starliner with a Tri-Powered 406 and a 4-speed. Never
got to drive it, but I assume Ford finally got with the program of putting power and brakes into
their cars. Even a well built 59 Ford was a SLUG. I have often wondered if the 60 was available
with serious performance goodies like that 61, or were they just a good looking DOG like the 59 ?

I knew it was there and that it didn't change much in the last 50 years or so because I drive past it regularly. There's another 1950's style motel near that one and they are both bound to be closed in the next couple of years, unfortunately. Old motels are an endangered species, especially in suburban neighbourhoods close to the city center as these are.
