Well, Ohio has a YOM licence plate statute on the books, but I doubt some collector would have made the mistake of putting 1964 tags on a 1957 car. The picture was taken in 1964, seven years after the car was built and it is in pretty amazing shape. The car doesn't exhibit any of the usual rust issues that one would expect for a seven year old car in the rust belt so maybe it wasn't used year around. I wonder if it's still in existence somewhere?

P.S.: Did you notice there is a child behind the wheel? Somebody's son and heir I daresay, but probably in his 50s now.

Great Vegas pictures Sid. I see all those cars parallel parked along the Strip and realized why all the cars I've owned have dinged up chrome bumpers.

No DeSoto mixes like that were sold in Canada. We had regular fireflite and firedome desotos only.

Correct answer is: Clusterf!ck

I am surpised they did not just put the DeSoto tags on some ugly POS
like a Panhard and run with it.

Call me a DeSoto snob, but we all know what a real 57-58 DeSoto looks
like. Cobbing a DeSoto bumper onto a Dodge nose that is hung on a Plymouth
does not a DeSoto make !

Export - DeSoto Diplomat. Take a Plymouth body, Firesweep front end, DeSoto nameplates and emblems, and you have a DeSoto Diplomat. Built in Canada and the U.S. for various export markets, such as South America, Europe, Mexico and Hawaii.

Canadians got the Firedome and Fireflite models, all imported from Detroit. Canadian production of real 1957 DeSoto models came to a big zero. In 1958 and 1959 the Firedome sedans and hardtops were built in Canada, while the Firedome convertible and all Fireflite and Adventurer models were imported.

The Firesweep, with its DeSoto grille and Dodge front end, was never sold in Canada.

Hey snobby, I can't stop laughing.. The major reason for the DeSoto Diplomat production was to help overseas DeSoto dealers to sell cars in a lower price class.
There were not compact cars offered until the 60's. What's wrong with it? Historically, they were very interesting models. Regular DeSoto Firedomes and Fireflites
were expensive cars abroad; in a whole different class than in the USA. Other countries were not as rich in economy than USA back then... If you can't stand export
models, what does it hurt when you cannot see them around you?

Easy answer ..... just sell Plymouth Plazas ! What difference did it make to juggle the front
end sheet metal and badging to a guy in Turkey, Brazil, or Guam ? He just wanted a basic car.
The malfunction was the thinking on this end. Selling a donkey to someone and telling them
it's an elephant .... what's wrong with this picture ? I know it is long over and done and history
at this point, but something is just not right with how the game was played. Calling them "export"
models doesn't make it right. It's a philosophical and ethical question. Not so much about the
cars themselves, but about how the business was done.

Actually, it wasn't so easy.. For example, here in Finland, DeSoto had different importer and dealer network than Chrysler & Plymouth.
DeSotos were imported by Berner and Laatuvaunu imported Chryslers-Plymouths. Dodge had own importer: Autokeskus - Bilcentralen.

The DeSoto Diplomats helped Berner's network to sell DeSotos in lower price class and Dodge Kingsway did Autokeskus. Laatuvaunu had
already Plymouths, so no separate export models needed there.

The export models were not all like bottom price Plazas. They were in three different equipment levels: "basic", Deluxe and Custom. So, Diplomat
was equivalent to Plaza, Diplomat Deluxe to Savoy and Diplomat Custom to Belvedere.

Well, actually they are still there, Golden Nugget, Freemont, Pioneer Club. Visited historic Las Vegas on christmas holidays, even had a lunch at Freemonts buffee.
They have covered the buildings and street with a huge roof and built something extra but those buildings are still there.
Place is located couble blocks away from the Strip so they are not on the strip. Not far away from the Pawn shop. (The Pawn Shop)

most of the buildings (like the sands and the desert in,etc, etc) and neons ARE gone. vegas looks completely different now. i was referring to mid century design googie architecture. the golden nugget does not belong into this category.
if you like fake pyramids and fake roman or greek palaces or fake german castles that look as if they were cast out of plastic in china good for you but its not for me. it looks like a freaking theme park that could be in europe, china or elsewhere. its no longer american, just like the cars.

Awesome series of pics on this thread.

Sid, your contribution as usual is exceptional.

Can someone on here tell me if there is a way to get a copy of all the pictures on this thread on a disk or memory stick? Maybe someone can sell me one at Carlisle!

Chrysler Corp. created its own mess indeed, by not even having the same dealer network for the different brands. In France, we had 3, like the Finnish case mentioned above: the one selling Plymouths, Chryslers and Imperials, the one selling DeSotos and the one selling Dodges. Even the importers of the cars were different: France Motors for Plymouth/Chrysler/Imperial, and Roblou for DeSotos (I don't recall who imported Dodges). That is why we could see a DeSoto Diplomat, a Dodge Kingsway and a Plymouth Savoy on the same market. The same car, under 3 different badges.

It was more efficient way for marketing Chrysler Corp. cars abroad to have different importers and dealer networks for the different brands. The result
we had a wide range of cars available. It's a free marketing economy in the western hemisphere. If there was an order to sell just Plymouth Plazas, it
smells like a planned economy..

I remember all those "low price" cars and I even drove some of them. The funny thing is the glamorous names for the "el cheapo cars".
That said, there's a '59 all black Dodge Kingsway 4DS in town that last was registred in '77 if I recall correctly. The car has a high wanna have factor, but the owner just refuses to sell.......

.......What I do is merely right-click on any thread-image that i want to preserve, and a drop-down menu occurs, with one of the options
thereon being :"Save Image As"...

..so I click-on "Desktop", as an easy-convenient destination for that image.

Once the image is moved to the Desktop, I can drag-and-drop that image from the Desktop into any other file
or folder destination that I desire.

Sometimes the confuser system (like: Evilpay auctions) doesn't want me to copy an image off of the video
screen...in which case I get out Mr. Camera, and take a photo directly off of the confuser's screen image.

Sometimes the confuser system (like: Evilpay auctions) doesn't want me to copy an image off of the video screen...in which case I get out Mr. Camera, and take a photo directly off of the confuser's screen image.

If I go with the mouse pointer to the middle of the picture I desire and click the RH button then a context menue appears. In the middle there is the option "save image as". If you choose this option an explorer like window opens and you could choose the destination as well as to change the name of the pictures. At me it works even with Windows 8.1 and Firefox 37.0.

At evil pay sometimes I have to search a little bit to find the "blind spot" where the same context menue appears. Then it's the same story, just in another color...

I wish good luck!

Dieter

Far as I know Neil, you need to go through the pain you described; one for one

Neil was answering a question from 60 Imp, further up the thread.

most of the buildings (like the sands and the desert in,etc, etc) and neons ARE gone. vegas looks completely different now. i was referring to mid century design googie architecture. the golden nugget does not belong into this category.
if you like fake pyramids and fake roman or greek palaces or fake german castles that look as if they were cast out of plastic in china good for you but its not for me. it looks like a freaking theme park that could be in europe, china or elsewhere. its no longer american, just like the cars.

I know! I have visited Vegas 5 or 6 times during last 30 years. I have actually seen its growth from the small city to huge.
I do not go Vegas to see old cars, architecture or roman palaces. I get there to have some FUN! To you and me Rome is much closer to go to knock old marble pilasters

If you do a screenshot of it you'll have the picture as well as whatever else is on the screen...

Just crop in to the pic and save.

(I assume you know how to do a screen print? If not, or if others don't, you'll find 'print screen' or an abbreviation thereof
on one of the buttons, typically near your 'delete' button. You hit that button simultaneously with the 'Alt' or 'Ctrl' key and it
copies either whatever's on your screen in total or whatever's in the window that's open to your clipboard. Open your picture
viewer - and if you have Irfanview it's the easiest of all - and paste to that.)

Awesome series of pics on this thread.

Sid, your contribution as usual is exceptional.

Can someone on here tell me if there is a way to get a copy of all the pictures on this thread on a disk or memory stick?

Steve.

thanks and i would like to know too!

See the descriptions above...

Right click, left click on 'Save image as' and direct to your memory stick where you might well set up a folder or folders for the purpose.

You will be wise (and it will definitely be necessary in some cases) to assign a new file name to each picture, I would recommend that you use the poster's name in that in case there's ever some cause to refer to him.

I would also recommend you go through and crop out the areas that haven't been cropped by the poster, like the one recently posted with some inches of black top and bottom of the actual picture.

Do you have Irfanview? It's a free download and makes all this stuff very easy.

57 Dodge and Chrysler

The car next to the Dodge is a 1957 Oldsmobile while the car after that it a 1957 Buick.

Easy to see why GM stylists were speechless when they saw the 1957 Mopar line-up. And why someone took a photo of the 1957 Oldsmobile and wrote "Suddenly It's 1950!".

For those web sites that disable the right click feature such as EvilPay, you can usually  get around this by using the snipping tool on Windows machines.Use it to snip the image and then save the snip to the desktop or to any other folder you choose. Saving a screenshot by holding down simultaneously the CTRL + PRTSCN buttons with do the same thing. If you paste the screenshot into Paint you can then manipulate the image and save only the part of it you want.

If all else fails, you could take a digital picture of your screen with a camera I suppose as was suggested elsewhere and save it to your computer with your camera software.
