Expert Posts: 1288 | sidesho_bob1961 - 2015-06-25 10:43 AM Can anyone identify the ship in the background? Bob -- I don't for sure as I can't see any hull or pennant numbers, but she may be either the U.S.S. Galveston (CL-93/CLG-3,) the U.S.S. Springfield (CL-66/CLG-7), or the U.S.S. Little Rock (CL-92/CLG-4), all of which were WWII Cleveland class light cruisers converted into guided missile light cruisers in the 1950s. I suspect that she is the Galveston as she was the only assigned to the Pacific as the other two served in the Atlantic and the Med. The only "rose festival" I know of is that in Portland, OR, and "Fleet Week" is a big attraction then. Joe Godec Edited by Sonoramic60 2015-06-29 1:05 PM

Expert Posts: 1288 | Dave -- That '60 Fury in the background is rather interesting as it seems to have black wall tires and not white walls, which were more trendy in those days. In that respect, it may lead one to think its owner was into serious competition as black walls were stronger. However, at that distance, it doesn't seem to have any "Commando" scare emblem on the front fender and there is no way to tell if there are class letters and a competitor number on the left rear window. The scare emblem issue is really a moot point as some guys didn't want them on (preferring a "sleeper"), some guys liked to show off and had them, and there were even a few who just bought them and put them on ordinary cars for the effect. Also, even if it isn't some kind of Commando powered car, it well may be in competition in one of the lower stock classes if the owner did some research and figured he/she could win in that particular class. Perhaps it was the car of the owner of that slingshot (it does have a MoPar hemi). Joe Godec

I normally go by the lack of hubcaps, but they could be removed before competition. I bought a 69 Coronet R/T convertible, 4 speed that had 383 emblems on the ramcharger hood scoops. It was one of the 4 Hemi Coronet stick ragtops for 1969, and I'll bet it gave many competitors a surprise on the street!. The second owner went to a used car lot with $100 to buy a 57 Ford from the back row for a stock car. After spotting this Coronet and taking it for a good "test" ride, he left the $100 as a deposit and picked the convertible up shortly afterward.

Expert Posts: 1288 | Dave -- You have right idea. I wanted the badges because I wanted to impress the girls, little knowing that 99.94% of them in those days knew enough about cars to be impressed by any engine. So, I loved the SonoRamic Commando Power "swoops" on the fenders. Dodge had the better idea of putting the "D-500" emblem on the deck lid so the Blue Oval, Bow Tie, and Poncho guys would realize what happened to them only after they saw the rear of their opponent. What kind of luck did you have maintaining that '69 Hemi? I had a '67 R/T with the 375 horse/440 CID mill and it was easy to keep in tune, but its 4-speed had only a 10 1/2" clutch and we shattered two of them. It also had that Inland Steel gearshift lever that gave a good imitation of a piece of spaghetti. In contrast, my '65 Sport Fury with the 365 HP/426 CID engine had an 11" clutch and a Hurst shifter -- so no problems. I really am an iconoclast as I never was a fan of the 426 Hemi as while I never did see one up close in the '64-'67 years, and I had heard and read that they tended to load up with carbon very easily. I can't talk about anything beyond 1967 as my wife and I got married in 1966 which kinda slowed me down, but everything came to screeching halt when our first-born came along in 1968. Joe
