Expert Posts: 2003 Location: Branson, MO | Hey, notice that the Imperial in the picture is a 4 door sedan. The 4 door sedans leaked much less than the hardtops did and heaven forbid, the convertible. I'd say they knew what they were doing when they used the sedan for the ad. "It's delightful, it's delovely, it's DeSoto" Edited by Viper Guy 2015-09-14 2:08 PM

American lost it's optimistic outlook. Car colors tend to mirror the mindset of the people. The fifties and sixties were a time of optimism, we planned to send a man to the moon!!! Then the recession of the early 70's rolled around at about the same time as all the safety and emissions standards (not saying they are bad but they did change how people looked at cars).

Extreme Veteran Posts: 489 Location: London, England | Doctor DeSoto - 2015-09-21 3:11 PM Boy, ... I remember when parking lots looked like that ... all sorts of colors and shapes. What happened ? The 70's fuel crisis led to the increased use of aerodynamics and weight saving in design. The safety campaign removed pointy bits and (eventually) knee-height hard bumpers. And The '40s revival in fashion (well, plus flares) brought back brown and orange as fashionable, muted colours. Mind you, in the UK at least there was a big rock 'n' roll and doo-wop revival, I was 13 in 1976 and was wearing straight leg jeans with turn-ups, so I have my excuse ready In Europe, car shapes were echoing the US of the '60s - look at a MKIII Cortina and you'll see Coke-bottle styling, or a 1st gen Toyota Celica looks like a little Mustang. And my Cortina was bright yellow, but there were lots of brown cars. Certainly in the UK now yellows, orange, red, aqua and so on are seen on cars all the time, if you can look past the silver and black Mercs! And I don't mean Mercurys! Take a look at a Laguna Seca Blue BMW to see a colour straight out of the '50s - maybe a bit dark, but close.

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | The 1990's was the era of the big change in car styling. Cars of the 1980's were generally one brick on top of two bricks, but they were painted in a wide variety of colours. And you could still tell a Toyota from a Ford without a program. In the 1990's the cars all became rounded blobs, looking like well-used bars of soap. Computers now painted cars and thus the colour choices shrank. From having a dozen or more colours in blues, greens, greys, and reds in various shades along with yellows, whites, blacks, etc., the 1990's brought us cars with a choice of six or seven colours - most of them various shades of silver or grey. Or you could be adventurous and choose black! Last week I was trying to find an office on a side street and when I turned onto the street there were cars parked on both sides - and no vacant spots. And all the cars were painted shades of silver or grey. Just a sea of blandness. Mind you, the colours did go with the styling. That parking lot scene in Chicago caught be off guard at first with that "1960" reference. Looking at it, I could see the 1952-53 Nash, 1949 Dodge Wayfarer, three 1957 Fords, a 1959 Ford, 1950-51 Mercury, 1955 Hudson (continental kit and all), a Morris Minor, and, of course, a 1957 Plymouth parked next to a 1956 Dodge. Then I caught sight of the 1957 DeSoto convertible as I moved across to the right side of the photo along with a couple of 1960 Chevrolets. No problem identifying the cars, or losing your silver car in a sea of grey. The comment about British cars following US examples - how about the early 1960's Ford Corsair with a 1961 Thunderbird nose?

With so many photos, I don't know where some were taken, and am not going to save where each one is in a different place. To me and probably most out there, they are nice to see the photos regardless of where they were taken.

Location: Bjorneborg, Finland | I didn't mean better to post location or any other special info to the file names. Often I don't know it either when found pics and saved them to the own folder. I keep them there and never delete any. I use a computer and was wondering above if using a computer, that whether it makes sense if all JPG-files are identically named in the same folder. Expert Posts: 4654 | My system is most likely poor....I put the pic in "my pictures" location, resize it if needed, and delete it after I post it, so I won't post it again hopefully. The memory isn't what it used to be. If I put it in a specific folder, and could "earmark" it as posted, I would save it. I do agree that it is interesting for any story or info, and I have to write it all down on paper to remember it for when I post the pic. Being retired, I do have the extra time.
